A new year, a new reign. On April 15th, 2015 Morehouse College presented its annual Miss Maroon and White pageant to crown their new queen. As told on Morehouse College's website, Miss Maroon and White [and her court] is the embodiment of the feminine representation of the qualities that the Men of Morehouse cherish and idealize. She is symbolic of the ideal counterpart of the Morehouse Man. Miss Maroon & White possesses and utilizes the pillars of the renowned Morehouse Man. So who is the new Miss Maroon and White 2016? Well, hundreds of Sparkhouse students flooded Kings Chapel in pop out attire to see who the new queen of Morehouse College be crowned.
Contestant #2, Jaya Johnson, represented the royal hue of purple. Her talent involved a hip hop dance and a technically challenging baton routine that had the crowd intrigued. Contest #3, Jasmin Eatman, represented gold. Her talent was a unique mix of classical ballet and trap music. She had the crowd lit instantly. Contestant number #4, Taylor Brightman, represented red. Her talent incorporated the arts as she danced to hip hop as a video montage played of AUC students learning arts. Contestant #5, Rajane Katurah, represented shimmering silver. Her talent brought the house down as she sang beautifully. The final contestant, Jasmine Mitchell, performed a contemporary dance to Ultralight Beam by Kanye West. Her talent reflected her platform, unarmed and innocent as she wore a black lives matter sweatshirt and she danced to protect her black brother from being shot by a police officer.
After the talent portion, the next section was evening wear and the onstage question. Each contestant gracefully made it across the stage in beautiful floor length gowns that sparkled in the spotlight. Each contestant and queen in the running answered the questions confidently and succinctly without stuttering.
After the on-stage question, the Miss Maroon and White 2015-2016 and her court took their last walks as the reigning MMW court. Miss Maroon and White 2015-2016, Devon Johnson, thanked the men of Morehouse for this incredible opportunity and referred to her court as her sisters.
So which contestant reigned supreme? Each contestant was amazing, but there could only be one queen (and her court). Taylor Brightman, was named second attendant and Jasmin Eatman was named first attendant. And your next Miss Maroon and White 2016 is...JASMINE MITCHELL! Congratulations to these beautiful ladies and best of luck to you all in this next year as you all represent the men of Morehouse.
