10 Things You'll Miss In Your First Year At College

Your first year of college is fun, new, and exciting. In the beginning, you will love almost everything that has to do with college. After a few weeks though, there are some things you will start to miss. Cherish these things while you have the chance!

1. Your bed at home.

You will be surprised how it feels to lay in your bed at home for the first time on Thanksgiving break. A lofted bed gets really old, really fast.

2. Singing in the shower.

I mean, you can sing in the shower at school, but it isn't the same (P.s. pitch perfect singing in the shower does NOT happen).

3. A homemade meal.

Trust me, an all-you-can-eat dining facility is cool for about three weeks. After that, all you want is to sit down at the dinner table with your family and eat something that wasn't made in bulk (or in a microwave).

4. Being able to hide in your room.

If you're a Netflix-lover as much as I am, hiding in your room with no interruptions is a favorite hobby of mine. At school, you have your roommate or your friends knocking on your door constantly. You really can't hide anywhere.

5. Not living in constant fear of a fire alarm.

You have not yet experienced this, but once you get home, you will understand. If you're anxiety prone like me, a fire alarm in the middle of the night/middle of a shower is your worst nightmare. Now that you are living in a dorm with 600-ish students, it isn't uncommon to have the fire alarm go off at 2 a.m. in the middle of January.

6. Your pets.

This is a given. You'll miss opening the door and not seeing a smiling little face. When you tell your college friends that you are going home to see your dog... they will understand.

7. Your family.

Independence is great, but it's normal to miss your family. Trust me when I say a phone call from Mom or Dad will be the highlight of some of your days.

8. Taking a shower without shoes.

You will get used to taking a shower in shower shoes. But, your first shower at home without them will be glorious.

9. Free groceries.

Shopping for food isn't as fun or as easy as it looks. You'll miss getting to open a pantry full of *free* food.

10. Your car and FREE PARKING.

Homer Simpson describes college parking in 10 seconds. If you're lucky and can have your car your first year of college, you'll most likely have to walk a mile or so to retrieve your car. Not to mention, the fee to have your car parked on campus (or parking tickets).

You might have to deal with all of these things, but it is the best four years of your life. Welcome to college.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
