There comes a time throughout your college career where you are settled into a routine of going to classes, studying for long hours, and finding your close niche friend group. A new chapter of your life has started and you get engulfed with an endless amount of new opportunities that you cannot pass up. You get so enticed in this new part of your life that the old part starts to fade away. But, there are some days you miss familiar places and familiar faces.
Going to a new school is extremely scary and nerve wracking. You know no one and have no idea how to navigate this new unfamiliar area. You are starting a new chapter in your life and finding out who you truly are. You have more independence and freedom to do whatever you want which is a blessing and a curse in one. You are also trying to figure out your career you want to pursue for the rest of your life which causes a ton of stress and anxiety for many.
Familiar places and faces help us feel secure and relaxed. We do not have to worry about making friends because we have grown up with all of our friends we have known for the past eighteen years and created a special bond by connecting on a very personal level. They know when we are sad, mad or happy just by looking at our face or our body language. Our friends know how to cheer us up with a simple movie night, heart to heart or a food run to your favorite diner or restaurant in town. We can go on crazy adventures together with the risk of getting caught by our parents, but always have each other’s back with the greatest fib in the world. We create so many memories that are priceless and will never be forgotten.
Coming back to your hometown creates a sense of warm sensation building up through your entire body knowing you will be home to the familiar streets you drove down every day throughout your childhood to get to school on time or to your friends’ house to hangout and have a great laugh. All of your worries fly away from the comfort of being with your family and friends and knowing you always have a great time when you come home.
It is okay to miss the familiar place called home. You are off on your own balancing your school work, creating new memories with your new friends, trying to earn internships which all leads up to getting a big person job in the real world. This can all be very stressful and you feel so alone. Sometimes you need to go home to destress and see familiar faces and places to help you realize you will be alright and will be able to conquer the world with a great support system behind you.
Home can mean many things to people. A home cooked meal, some late night antics with old friends, a nice day spent with your parents or just a relaxing day sitting on the couch watching television is home. Everyone moves onto bigger parts of their lives, but still miss home at some point along their journey. Just take a step back and go travel back to those familiar roads lined with trees that we call home.
