"Hereeeeeeeee she comes, Miss America," and believe it or not, she has more on her mind than the dress she's wearing or the way she looks. There's a lot more that goes behind a title than the pageant itself. With the newly crowned Miss America 2016, it's hard to not take a deeper look. So many beautiful and smart young women all competing for the same title. So what's some things every pageant girl wishes the public knew?
1. We are passionate about our cause.
Young women all over the world are willing to stand in front of crowds ranging from hundreds to millions standing for a cause they feel strong about. These women work for their platform year round and put their heart and soul into what they believe in. The crown is more than a title itself; it's what you do with what you stand for and represent. In a room of all beautiful and talented women, how do you stand out?
2. We wear more than just a dress and heels.
Believe it or not, we all go home after a long day in the public eye, wash our makeup off, and get into our comfiest pairs of sweatpants just like everyone else. Also, don't underestimate a pageant girl's will to get down and dirty. We work hard for what we want, and we're not afraid of a little sweat when it comes to meeting our goals.
3. We are our biggest critics.
At the end of the day, how you feel about yourself is what truly matters. Knowing you put your all into something is the most rewarding, no matter the outcome. We learn from our mistakes and grow from experience.
4. We're not perfect.
Sometimes we trip, slip up on our words, stutter, and draw a blank. You know what this means? We're human. No matter how hard you prepare, accidents happen. It's how you react from your mistakes that make you, you.
5. We win even if we lose.
Overall, pageantry is a growing experience. It teaches you how to appreciate winning and accept losing. It teaches you manners, posture, and stage presence. Most importantly, it gives you confidence. When you walk off a stage feeling beautiful, the outcome is that you know you're competing for all the right reasons.
