As you get closer to turning 21, you might have an epiphany. I don't know if it's because you're entering adulthood that you're suddenly having this striking moment, but it's sort of funny, you know? The things you once dreaded or wish you didn't experience, you change your mind about them. You no longer feel restricted by them; you just accept them.

And, here I am, thanking the world for these 21 misfortunes life threw at me before I enter adulthood.

1. Not going to the school of my dreams

I used to mope around for being able to go to my first choice, but I have come into terms with it and it's okay that I didn't because I am where I'm supposed to be.

2. Struggling through my freshman year of college

It taught me to take school more seriously. College is a whole other world compared to high school.

3. Losing friends I thought I would always have no matter what

It happened whether I wanted it or not. People change and it is part of life.

4. Experiencing more than one heartbreak

Not just a heartbreak from a boy, but also from friends.

5. Not transferring to a different college after my first year

If I had transferred to another university, I would not have made the new friends I have now.

6. Failing and retaking a class in college

But, it was a good thing I got the chance to retake it; I did better and got the A I wanted.

7. Moving from one country to another

As a nine-year-old, it was scary. Moving to another country felt like I was moving to a whole new world instead. I had to leave behind everyone and everything I'd ever known.

8. Changing schools multiple times before high school

It was dreadful because it always meant having to make new friends every time. But, now, I have friends in different places.

9. Moving to the middle of nowhere for college

At first, I thought it was the worst idea I could ever come up with, but it isn't too bad now. Being far enough from home taught me to be more independent.

10. Going to a small high school

Thinking about it now, it was nice growing up with the same people I've known since middle school.

11. Having insecurities

It made me hate myself for some time, but I learned to embrace my "flaws" and it has been one of the best things to happen to me.

12. Always being "one of the guys"

Being a "bro" is more fun because you get the exclusive insight from the boys.

13. Drunk-texting a certain person

Sometimes it could lead to something good!

14. Giving up my social life for a semester

Yes, I had major FOMO, but it helped me get my life together.

15. Having a major surgery that changed my life

It was scary, but it made me realize how strong I am as a person after what I went through during and after it.

16. Going random when picking a roommate for my second year

My roommate has become my best friend and I would not have it any other way.

17. Losing family members

I learned to appreciate my family more.

18. Watching my mom's health deteriorate

It made us closer; she has become my best friend.

19. Being sent to a public school

I got to go to the same school as the kids in my neighborhood!

20. Being bullied in elementary school

I became tough and learned not to let people make me feel inferior.

21. Being the first child a.k.a my parents' guinea pig

Hey, Mom and Dad! If you're reading this, just know you did great and raised a legend!

Through hell and back, I am thankful for the setbacks I had before turning 21. They have made me become a better version of myself and not take life too seriously. I can say that I am living my best life!

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
