From time to time, they're have been an issue that has been in the forefront for quite some time now is minimum wage. I know many people, especially those around my age, are majorly effected by minimum age. Most of us wonder how the government expect us to maintain a decent lifestyle with such little money coming in. I decided to look a little deeper into the situation because I don’t understand why it is such a complicated topic. More money equals a better life right? Seems simple enough for me. Well, I didn’t understand why the topic was so complicated until after I did more research on both sides of the argument.
One side of the debate is that minimum wage should not be increased. People who support this argument believe that raising the minimum wage will have a negative impact on small and new businesses. As a result, many jobs will be lost because smaller businesses would not be able to afford the higher minimum wage to pay their employees. So people could get paid more. But in return, the unemployment rate could go up.
The other side of the debate is that minimum wage should be raised to about $15 per hour. Supporters on this standpoint argue that the increased wages will attract the better employees. They also believe that the Unites States does not benefit from poor workers. “It is a national disgrace that millions of full-time workers are living in poverty and millions more are forced to work two or three jobs just to pay their bills,” Sanders said at the outdoor rally near the Capitol. “In the year 2015, a job must lift workers out of poverty, not keep them in it. The current federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour is a starvation wage and must be raised to a living wage.”
If asked my opinion, I would tell you that I understand both sides. I am in the middle of these choices. As wages decline, there is a significant decrease in real purchasing power. Therefore, workers must take on more work in order to survive. So I definitely agree that the current minimum wage is entirely too low. I agree with Hillary Clinton to a certain extent. Hillary believes we are long overdue in raising the minimum wage. She has supported raising the federal minimum wage to $12. She also supports the Obama administration’s expansion of overtime rules to millions of more workers.
I think that raising the minimum wage to $12 an hour would be a better option because if wages go up dramatically, no doubt the cost of living will follow suit and begin to rise as well. If you put money into the hands of working people, it will create more jobs. The more they earn, the more they will spend, which will result in the growth of the economy.
It is not hard to see why the debate on minimum wage is so complicated. Each angle has some great points that should all be considered. It’s a tricky topic. Especially when all parts of the debate has pros and cons. No matter which option is chosen, there will more than likely be a downfall. No one would be satisfied with either of the decisions.
