Mama, because I am a broke college student and I can not afford a gift, I am writing this open letter to show my appreciation for you. I'm not one to get sappy, you know this. But I am not ashamed to admit that I did cry while writing this. Maybe get some tissues?

Dear Mama,

Happy Birthday! Thank you for everything you've ever done for me.

First of all, I love you a lot. I don't say it nearly as often as I should, but you know I do. And I know you love me too. I know not every 20-year-old girl has her mother to help her get through the most pivotal moments of her life, so I feel extremely blessed to have you in my life.

Thank you for being my mom.

I may not be your only child, but I am your only daughter. And I haven't made life easy for you. Everything from refusing to eat vegetables to putting an entire state between us; I did it. I've probably pissed you off in every way imaginable. I'm stubborn and forgetful and bratty at times, but that doesn't mean I take you for granted. In fact, I can't possibly thank you for everything you've ever done for me because you've done so much. I could thank you a million time's and it still wouldn't be enough.

You've always been my biggest supporter and my number one fan. I never realized that until now, so many years later. You sat through: 15 years worth of softball games, 5 years worth of cheer seasons, countless numbers of plays, recitals, concerts, and award ceremonies. Whether it was freezing or sweltering out, you watched me do it all (sometimes from the car, but that's okay, I still appreciate it). You drove me to appointments, rehearsals, and practices — no matter how inconvenient it was. It was because of you that I managed to get to everywhere I needed to be. I will forever be grateful for it all.

You and dad put so much effort, time, and money into all of our lives. Your work ethic puts food on the table, hot water in the showers, it pays for my college tuition and so many other luxuries.

I know can speak for my brothers and myself when I say you raised us to be the best versions of ourselves: strong, kind, and appreciative.

I thank the world every day that I have you as my mother. I don't think anyone else could handle it.

With love,

Your daughter

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
