To be honest, I think I hate my generation. I mean this in the nicest way possible. I am completely apart of this technology boom; the good and bad of it all. This generation is too busy playing on our phones and computers to realize the world around us. We "forget” to put our phones down and actually talk to the people right in front of us.
My senior year I decided that I wanted to ask my friends if we could all put our phones away for the lunch time we had to, and just talk. To be honest with you, I don’t think it lasted that long. We forget to cherish things and live in the moment. The past was five seconds ago, five minutes ago, five hours ago… Did you spend it on your electronic device? Or did you live in the moment with the people right in front of you?
Don't get me wrong, the invention of all these technological devices is truly an amazing improvement in our world. We can contact people who are not around us, but we suddenly forget the important people and things around us in the moment.
On the other hand, what has it done to us? I am nineteen years old and I can honestly say I hate confrontation. It is most likely from the fact that there is a device I can sit behind and say what I want there, instead of face-to-face. Behind a screen you can be a completely different person then in person. Are we creating something we are going to regret? Anybody can act like a tough guy behind a phone screen, but how about in person. Are we dismissing the idea of social interaction? Are we creating antisocial people? This is probably because there is this new idea called social media. I know, ironically enough you are probably reading this through a social media. But, are you addicted to it?
My generation is also obsessed with this social media, some people put their whole life on the Internet. But, that isn't the only problem, we for some reason get this amazing feeling of satisfaction from the amount of likes we get on a post. Why do we care so much about if other people like our posts or not? Why do we get this weird feeling and satisfaction from it? There are people out there that delete their post if they don’t get enough.
This Summer I tried to go without social media because it is just so out of hand this obsession over likes. I admit, it was hard, but I also did not last all Summer. On the bright side, it was actually great not being on my phone 24/7. This is like an addiction that we really need to get rid of.
Yes, we get it, technology has done so much for us, but it comes to a point where it just is too much. I challenge you to put your technology down, because you should never miss a chance to live in the moment.
