Costs Of Being a Millennial

Misunderstandings of Baby Boomers, Generation X... the whole nine yards, on what this generation is dealing with in order to strive

Most generations before us want to think of millennials as the group that get every little tiny thing handed to them. But why, what makes them think that way? As far as I know, my generation is just as hardworking as the last, maybe even more. We have to work harder than any other generation just to get a decent job after college, WHILE paying deathly rates of student loans per month. An article in Forbes magazine called,"The 5.4% Unemployment Rate Means Nothing For Millennials," even retorts that with the fact that "44% of college grads in their 20's are stuck with low wage dead end jobs, the highest rate in decades.." So while the student debt crisis is well under way, we millennials are also lost in finding decent paying jobs to make a living for ourselves, with or without the help of our loving parents.

If you're a person who needs numbers for proof, according to Entrepreneur.com, the millennial generations total student loan costs average about $120 billion altogether with studies from 2011-2012. With that number just 5-6 years ago, imagine the number we would see now.

With that, stereotypes about this generation are out of line, especially regarding education and us complaining about the cost of it. It is known that in this day and age, it is hard to get a part time job while being a full time student. Part time jobs at minimum wage will barely cover any college tuition costs, let alone the cost of living.

Therefore, our complaints about college costs should not be shot down where we are clearly showing an interest in making a success of ourselves by taking some kind of education path or even joining the workforce straight away. According to whitehouse.gov, "millennials have invested in human capital more than [any other] previous generations." So the next time you hear that we are handed everything to us, remind those people that we have the resources handed, but we are the ones putting in the blood, sweat, toil and tears in order to do something with it. Also hit them with those facts. We are a generation of believers and we are constantly striving to get the most out of what we are given, we are not blindly taking each helping hand we get.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
