As a millennial, I can say that social media presence is important amongst all of us. Yes, there are people who'll go on to say that they don't care about social media, but even the mere fact of having social media accounts means that you care, even if it's just the tiniest bit.
Humans were programmed to be curious. We like to know what everyone is up to. Whether it's your best friend or the person you hate, there's a chance that you check up on them for the very reason that you have the ability to. Their "lives" are at your leisure with just the click of an app.
That being said, there comes the pressure of having the seemingly "perfect" life on social media. It's no secret that we post the best aspects of our lives where everyone can see. It only makes sense to show everyone that we're doing well, thriving in happiness as opposed to wallowing in our misery.
However, where is that line between posting your life events versus social media consuming your life?
We're all guilty of posting multiple photos of fun events, such as the vacations we're on, our senior proms, and even those fun nights out with our friends. Snapping a photo here and there is human nature, though it starts to become overbearing when you're constantly on your phone editing and filtering your photos to make them fit your "Instagram theme."
Sometimes it's rewarding enough to simply live in the moment and not worry about grabbing your phone and asking someone to take a picture. Some of the best memories are the ones not captured.
Next time you go to pick up your phone for that Snapchat story or Instagram picture, think. Is it crucial to take this moment and stage it? Or would you be better off living in the moment and keep this memory for yourself?
Sometimes there's more to life than a great Instagram aesthetic.
