There are many myths about Republicans. Many people believe all Republicans are old, white men who only care about money (Ben Carson or Carly Fiorina, anyone?). Or that they view government as traditional and only watch Fox News. Well, I have indeed heard of MSNBC and have even seen their newscasts! Maybe, you think that Republicans only care about themselves and view their way as the only way; which as an open minded person I can tell you is completely wrong.
I am a Republican who is currently attending a liberal university and have had many conversations with my friends at school regarding our political views. Discussions ranging from presidential predictions to current social issues, and 99 percent of the time they laugh at me, thinking that I'm crazy to be a Republican.
I, for one, am proud to announce my political view; I've even gone as far as to place a Republican elephant sticker on my car. (Which has not been keyed, egged, or scratched off. Yet.) Throughout the years, I've learned that I should never have to hold back my thoughts, and I should never be afraid to say what is on my mind. I stand my ground when it comes to politics and I am always up for a debate.
Other millennial Republicans have probably felt the same way I have. We roll our eyes at #FeelTheBern hashtags and refuse to acknowledge the selfie of Kim Kardashian with Hillary Clinton. We ignore the Trump 2016 jokes and dismiss the snotty comments about how messed up our party is.
We ignore our professors who say they do not share their political views in the classroom, but we really know what they mean. Especially when they turn around and make a joke about the Republican Party. We scroll through those posts our fellow students write during the debates, trying not to get annoyed at them. Especially when they praise Bernie Sanders for promising to make everything "free." Nothing is free in life, have you heard that saying before?
So, maybe our political principles align with our parents' and grandparent's, but we also have a new perspective and fresh eyes when we look at our political system. We live in a different generation and have different experiences compared to the conservatives before us.
Millennial Republicans understand that not all Republicans agree on the same issues. We all have our own opinions and sometimes we disagree, but we still want what is best for this country. And most importantly, when we find another person that is a Republican at our age, we get excited and pray they have a College Republican National Committee poster hanging in their room too.
