It all started with a haircut. Ever since Miley’s style, music and behavior have been common debate topics in pop culture. I want to share my emotional journey as a Miley fan for those of you who still haven’t come back around.
Miley Stuart/Hannah Montana
A.k.a my childhood idol. Although I may not double as a superstar, I felt like I lived the same life as this fictional character. From making my own version of the bone dance to wishing I were lucky enough to have the Jesse Jake dilemma (Jesse, duh), I lived off of this show. I have never felt more joy than when we thought it was the end after season three and Disney announced the fourth season (my dad had the opposite reaction -- how we got him to watch the final episode willingly is beyond me). When the show went on Netflix, my sister and I watched it so much, we had the episode names memorized and would compete to see who could name the most. This show was my entire life.
The Haircut
When Miley chopped off the locks I used to aspire to, I went into mourning. I remember thinking, it’s just a matter of time until she gets fancy extensions, it’ll be fixed. This hope still remains crushed, although I have grown to accept her new do with time.
The VMAs with Robin Thicke
This was where I lost faith. There was no way I could support this kind of un-Miley-Stuart-like behavior. I still hoped it was a phase and sadly reminisced on the "Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus" album (still some of the best songs ever).
"Can’t Stop Won’t Stop"
When I saw this video, I just wished it would all stop (even though the song is actually so catchy).
"I Adore You"
When Miley released this song, I was reminded of the main reason why I loved her: her talent. No matter how much you may disagree with how she conducts herself, if you deny the fact that she can sing you have some serious issues.
“Summertime Sadness” Cover
This is when I fell completely back in love with Miley. If you haven’t heard this cover, you need to. Her passion for her music is something that just seeps into your soul undeniably.
Present Day
While I don’t support every single thing she does, I respect her for being herself. I recently read an article on what the filming process of "Hannah Montana" was like for her. The girl underneath the wig and makeup was someone giving young girls unrealistic standards of beauty, and it’s understandable that Miley didn’t want to convey that message to her viewers.
If you haven’t heard her new album, "Miley Cyrus and her Dead Petz," it’s great. The song she performed at this year’s VMAs does not reflect the entire album. Most of the songs showcase her musical talent and passion. I will definitely be attending her tour coming in the late fall!
If you are a Miley hater, I hope this article offered a new perspective. The bottom line is that she’s a singer. Her music should be people’s main focus, not her life choices.
