"Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates" stars Zac Efron, Adam Devine, Aubrey Plaza, and Anna Kendrick. Zac Efron and Adam Devine are in the titular roles as Mike and Dave, and they are the life of the party, but they are asked to bring nice dates to their sister's wedding, so Aubrey Plaza and Anna Kendrick jump at the opportunity for a free vacation.
This movie boasts a great cast for a comedy, and I gotta say, I liked this movie a lot more than I thought I would. All the main members of the cast are very funny, and a lot of the supporting characters are pretty funny as well. I'll be honest; through the first half of the movie, I thought this had the making of a classic. I consistently found myself cracking up, there was a lot more heart to the movie than you might expect, and I think it is executed pretty well. Now, the second half... it's just not as good. The jokes start falling flat, and at times, it seems like the movie is trying really hard to make you laugh with forced jokes in kind of serious moments. There were two scenes back-to-back toward the end of the movie that I thought were just awful; they were painfully expositional and just not funny whatsoever, in my opinion. Another element that holds this movie back from being a classic is how unoriginal it is. This isn't a glaring issue; the jokes still work for the most part, this movie just doesn't break any new ground.
Overall, "Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates" is a very funny movie that has shades of "Wedding Crashers" in it, but has too many elements that hold it back from being anything special. Nonetheless, it's a very talented, funny cast, and I think they all do a pretty good job of making the audience laugh in this movie.
