Picture this: It's It's 6:15 am. Your alarm on your iHome has just gone off. You click "Kiss Me Thru the Phone" and go to get dressed for school. You put on your PINK yoga pants, favorite Hollister hoodie, and your converse. For today's makeup look, you'll be wearing blue eyeshadow to match your blue hoodie, lip gloss, and mascara. You take a look in the mirror at your fashionable look and smile, grab your backpack and get ready to go. It's 2008 and life is good.
This was a typical day for me as a middle schooler. I was in the middle of my "ugly phase" which I am very proud to have had. It allowed me to grow and find my own style, as well as learn that my mom was right raccoon liner was never a good idea. But I have noticed something in recent years. Today's middle schoolers don't look like this at all. In fact, they all look like they're my age! I have been racking my brain as to why? And I think I have cracked the code.
1. They have the gift of Pinterest
Half the battle in Middle School is figuring out what outfit to wow them all with. As Lizzie McGuire taught me at a young age, no one wants to be an outfit repeater! If I had Pinterest back in my middle school days, a lot of fights with my mom over me making us late would not have occurred.
2. Makeup tutorials via YouTube
Beauty blenders? Baking face? I knew about NONE of that. My idea of a "great" makeup look was coordinating my eyeshadow color to the color of shirt I was wearing that day
3.Social Media
Sure, we had it too, but it wasn't as relevant the way it is today. Instagram puts the pressure on to look "selfie-ready" and I'm glad that wasn't around when I was 13!
4. Cooler Stores
Let's face it- middle schoolers today have cooler stores and more clothing options than I did in middle school.
5. Netflix and Hulu
Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime? These forms of streaming were as popular when we were in middle school. With the influence of TV- especially reality television, it's easier for middle schoolers today to want to dress and look like the stars they watch.
I love Kim K as much as the next person, but I am thankful for my days of terrible makeup and wearing PJ pants to school. I hope today's middle schoolers don't grow up too fast and know that there is a time for everything. It just doesn't have to be right now! So kids, enjoy your TeenNick and Capri Sun. Your time for makeup and Gucci is just around the corner.
