It is practically universally agreed that there was a certain time span in all of our lives that we tend to find the most dreadful: middle school. There's nothing like that chill that runs down your spine when you see yourself in photos during the good old middle school days while sporting braces, Aeropostale polo shirts and Silly Bandz while trying to attempt to draw on pencil eyeliner and glamorously apply the $2 lip gloss your mom bought you for Christmas.
And let's not forget the boys. It was an incomparable time for us pre-pubescent young women when smelling about 50 bottles of Axe deodorant not-so-generously applied to the future gentlemen of America checking out their non-existent abs in the locker room. It was such an amazing time to be alive.
However, nowadays when my college psyche tells me to mindlessly scroll through the depths of social media rather than study for that Biochemistry exam lurking on an upcoming Friday, I notice my eyes begin to slightly twitch and my inner mother senses are rapidly firing faster than a machine gun. I see middle schoolers posting photos that my mother would slap me if I posted, such as ones posing in too awkward to bare photos or even glorifying that they're drinking alcohol.
When I was in middle school, I always felt like I should have pulled up to that restaurant in my Harley Davidson and leather jacket while snapping to some 1950s song about how great life is when I ordered a Shirley Temple. The fact that some of these young adults are glorifying how "turnt" they feel up on a Friday makes me somewhat queasy.
Let's face it. Alcohol is extremely glorified in this country, and around the world. It's practically the norm for the typical college student to drink, and even high school students—although not legally—will drink. But middle school students? That just doesn't seem to rub me the right way, especially without adult supervision.
Although I am a strong proponent for self expression and would never body-shame someone for posting a photo on social media, these young persons really shouldn't be displaying themselves in that way. There are far too many more things to be focusing on in middle school rather than how good your butt looks. Let's be realistic here, kiddies.
It's also somewhat frightening at how some of these young girls can put their makeup on like they've been working as a makeup artist professionally for 30 years. My middle school facial glam session featured some cheap Cover Girl mascara and lip gloss, and some horribly applied eyeliner if I was feeling scandalous. I mean, go them for being talented with their makeup skills, but what happened to exploring the wonders of natural beauty in middle school?
There are, of course, some middle school students who don't fall into this new category of middle school; this is in no way all encompassing of this generation. From my dance school and family friends, I know some young middle school students who aren't all caught up in drinking and posting racy photos online, but rather are interested in just simply having genuine fun with friends and focusing on being successful in school. But in my opinion, it's getting a bit out of hand of how fast some of these children want to grow up.
This is just my perspective, and I do understand that the societal norms of today are drastically different than 10 years ago. I'm not trying to say these kids are any less of a person or aren't wonderful people, I just feel that these kids really should try to enjoy the easy life of middle school, before you're lying in your dorm room in college desperately wanting nap time and recess.
