So the other night at the Met Gala the theme for the event was “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination."
As with all good things it is being met with huge amounts of controversy. Something that I am still having a difficult time grasping is the huge amounts of backlash that the event is being met with.
It was approved by the Vatican.
The highest power in the Catholic Church approved this event. They even sent pieces of clothing that are commonly worn in the church to be shown at the event. The Pope has not publicly spoken out about this exhibition but the president of the pontifical council assisted in the creation and approval of the event.
The gowns were based on Biblical and historical contexts.
Although we had Rihanna start off the night in a dress similar to that of what a pope or bishop may wear, I still thought it was cool. Examples of the historical context were shown in the outfits worn by SZA, Lana Del Rey, and Lena Waith in different ways. SZA and Lana Del Rey took more of the biblical approach. Lena Wait was an example of Pope Franics' progression and changing the acceptance of LGBTQ in the Catholic Church.
As a person of the Catholic faith, I found this event to be unique and interesting. Seeing biblical figures brought to life in an array of ways is something that many of us would never know or think of in our lifetimes. Some of the figures portrayed I had never even heard of. Feel free to call me a poor follower of my religion that I have been brought up in since I was born.
Just leave it alone.
The Met Gala was an extravagant event before the theme of Catholicism and will be after this year's theme. I thought the ideas created were unique and all paid respect to what each celebrity thought was important.
Being Catholic shouldn't be affected by the portrayal that celebrities take on historical figures in the church. The history of this church dates back to the Middle Ages. Of course, there is going to be vast amounts of history and figures that come from that. Other religions have their clothing mocked and even worn as a Halloween costume.
While people of the Catholic faith have been so quick to cry cultural appropriation over this theme, you must step back and think that many of the people angered over this theme have often been in the position to mock other faiths.
It is all a matter of perspective. The Catholic religion has a lot to be showcased. It is rich in history and shows how far the church has come in time.
