The first Monday of every month of May is one evening in which culture, the world's most famous celebrities, fashion, and extravagance combine: the Met Ball. The Met Ball is a fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum's Costume Institute, and marks the start of that year's Costume Institute exhibition. Theoretically, those invited to the Ball have the option of dressing up in a garment which relates to the exhibition's theme, this year's being "Manus x Machina: Fashion in the Age of Technology," so you can imagine there were some pretty weird looks out there. Since the Met Ball is an event I love to wonder about (and dream to attend some day -- a girl can hope), and some of this year's looks left me with really strong feelings, here is my ranking of the Met Ball 2016's Best, Worst, and What the Hell (in no particular order).
Best
1. Lily Rose-Depp
Dressed in a Chanel ensemble for her first ever Met Ball, the 16-year-old daughter of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis stunned those around her (and those far away from her too, thank you technology). Having only recently risen to the status of the new it-girl, the actress and model is clearly making the right choices to rise even higher. Also, just a side note, how pretty is she?!
2. Gigi Hadid (& Zayn)

3. Kendall Jenner

4. Karlie Kloss
While the phrase "I'm going to wear a white dress to the Met Gala" may make it seem like you will be underdressed, Karlie Kloss showed us how to make a white dress anything but basic (or bridal). The geometric cutouts resonate with the Gala's theme, but don't make it obvious that she is dressing up to for a futuristic environment. Even better, Kloss showed us that we do not need two dresses in order to be stylish for the Gala and afterparty -- designer Brandon Maxwell himself cut Kloss' gown, transforming it into a fun short dress for the afterparty.
5. Olivia Wilde
In all honesty, I am taken aback by how beautiful Olivia Wilde is every time I look at a picture of her. Without letting her pregnancy stop her from attending the event, Olivia chose a Michael Kors gown whose metallic details resonated with the event's theme very well. The dress also serving as a statement necklace really rounded off her look.
Worst
1. Nicki Minaj
Okay. What is going on? The dress mixes too many different textures and elements (transparency, glossy belts everywhere, too much cleavage, the train, the gloves). Her hair is also giving me Cruella de Vil vibes which, as an animal lover, I do not appreciate or enjoy.
2. Ciara
So this dress takes elements from 20s and 30s fashion (mostly the hair and the fringes) and mixes it with sheer fabric and metallic details and silver hair. It's a lot to take in. Also, while I do appreciate Ciara's effort in trying to show the world that affordable brands can be red carpet worth (her dress is from H&M), I would recommend she choose a new stylist.
3. Rita Ora
Hey guys! It turns out Rita Ora wasn't Becky with the good hair after all (as the pin she wore at the Met Gala's afterparty clearly stated). But then again, on the red carpet, Rita revealed her actual true identity: queen of the pigeons of the future. Not to mention that the dress' train looks like a feather duster. I do love her hair though, so she's awarded a few positive points.
4. Beyoncé
OK, people are going to hate me for this, but I don't care. Latex dresses have been a growing trend in the world of fashion; I understand that, but this isn't working at all. It looks like Beyoncé was wrapped in a female version of "American Horror Story"'s Rubber Man costume, and the combination of the skin-coloured latex, the white pearls and the red details is making me think nasty, gross thoughts which I would rather not have. Not to mention that she wore a sheer dress to the Met Ball last year -- come on, it worked once; don't abuse the look. Her hair and makeup are flawless, though, I must say.
5. Katy Perry
Where to begin? The dress itself is already a lot to take in: velvet, gold and green details, a belt, puffy sleeves... But on top of that she wears gloves, an eye-catching hairstyle and dark makeup? There's a lot going on here. It certainly was a statement (maybe to try and upstage one of the Gala's co-chairs, Taylor Swift?), but it didn't work for me.
What the Hell
1. Sarah Jessica Parker
I get it; Sarah Jessica Parker makes a statement every year in the Met Ball red carpet, and she is allowed to do so. But why, God why, is she wearing these shorts!? Honestly, I would have enjoyed her outfit so much more if they were pants, even (look at Emma Watson's pantsuit/dress; it was beautiful. There is a way to be comfortable and look good), but I wasn't able to digest this outfit at all. Also, can we comment on the tulle and the shoes?
2. Solange
There are so many ways to support your siblings. I mean, so many. The world is full of opportunities for you to show your family love and support. But when your sister releases an album called "Lemonade," you do not need to dress like an actual lemon to show the world you care. I appreciate the effort and intention, Solange, but maybe it's best if you do your own thing the next time.
3. Madonna
1. Boobs and butt visible.
2. Lace.
3. Leather knee-high boots.
4. Whatever the hell this jewelry is.
4. Lady Gaga

5. Zoe Kravitz
