A Message To My Long-Distance Best Friend

They say that your best friend is your actual soul mate, and I believe that is definitely the case with you and me.

A Message To My Long-Distance Best Friend
Mikayla Coyne

A best friend is more than just a friend. A best friend can be considered like a sister, a mother and a friend all in one. Whether you’ve known them your whole life or just a few months, when you create a special bond with someone, you know its forever. You must cherish every moment you get to spend with your best friend because you never know when they might leave, even if it means moving 400 miles away.

Whether it was going to the mall or just to grab a coffee from Dunks, we did everything together. You’d pick me up from school when I couldn’t drive yet, surprise me when I was upset, or just showed up at my house uninvited. You know our friendship is eternal when we can eat an entire pizza, wings and Cinna Stix with no judgment. I never realized how much I appreciated having you around the corner until I found out you were moving.

Finding out you were moving almost 400 miles away didn’t seem real at first. I didn’t realize that it was all going to end. Seeing each other every day was going to turn into seeing each other once or twice a year. Our “meet at my house in five minutes” conversations will become memories until we’re finally old enough to live in our apartment together that we’ve been dreaming about since we were 6 years old. I couldn’t imagine not seeing you every day because that would mean that I have no one to be crazy with. It was hard to grasp the reality that the closest thing I have to a sister my age was leaving me. Your little brother became my little brother and your parents became my second parents.

Our friendship is rare and only happens once in a lifetime. I know that we will be together through it all; our wedding dresses, our first kids, and of course tasting all the potential wedding cake. I will cherish what we have forever because I know that we will probably end up buried together. They say that your best friend is your actual soul mate, and I believe that is definitely the case with you and me. Nothing can beat our laughs, our crazy conversations and most of all our jam sessions in the car.

A 400-mile distance can’t stop us from continuing this friendship, it only makes it stronger. Somehow we’ve made three hour FaceTime calls and making our Snapchat streak as long as possible work. Getting ready to come visit is more exciting than Christmas morning, and seeing each other after almost a year feels better than winning the lottery.

So thank you for giving me a friendship I never thought was possible. No one can ever replace you, you are definitely “one of a kind” and quite a handful at times. But I wouldn’t change that for anything. Thank you for dealing with my craziness, my hunger, and my unaffectionate personality. I'll see you soon.

Love,

Your long-distance best friend.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
