Recently there was another Odyssey article about why you shouldn't date a "frat boy." Let me start by saying that we are in college, so I'm pretty sure we are men now. The article also listed that all we do is party? Really? Last time I checked we are in college and partying is basically called a social life. Basically, the article only stated things in the wrong light.
Let me put it in the right lighting. Here are some facts about the people that help lead this country to greatness. First, 40 of 47 U.S. Supreme Court Justices since 1910 were fraternity men. 76% of all Congressmen and Senators belonged to a fraternity. Every U.S. President and Vice President, except two in each office, born since the first social fraternity was founded in 1825, have been members of a fraternity. Being Greek makes leaders for this country. They also make iconic music. Elvis Presley, Willie Nelson, Luke Bryan and many more were fraternity men.
Now, let's get to those stupid socials. We have date parties and formals that we can bring a GDI female or male too because there are also many gay fraternity men around the world. We are not closed-minded when it comes to what gender the brother or sister finds attractive. We are also very careful at these socials because socializing is a huge part of the college experience. Many races are in Greek fraternities, I personally have brothers who are African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, and Philippine-Americans. Look at any fraternity in the world and you will see a melting pot of culture. You know what that reminds me of? America, it is a melting pot of culture and that what makes America great.
The article also states that Greek life members are not in college to study. However, to even stay in a Greek organization there are certain college GPA and chapter GPA requirements. But like every college student there is good semester and bad semester. We are all human and we all mess up.
Greek fraternities help out on campus and in the community. There was actually a TFM (Total Frat Move) article about a college girl with a disability and a fraternity helped her out when she was lost and sat with her when she was alone at the dining hall.
Clearly, we are not here just to party. We have to have a good GPA to stay in the chapter. We help out in the community and on campus. Don't get me started on philanthropy! My fraternity even raises money for St. Jude's, a children's hospital. We actually go visit the patients and try our best to cheer them up.
I'm not going to say there aren't bad people in Greek fraternities or sororities. But there are bad people in life. I wish we lived in a perfect world but we do not. Greek life isn't bad, it is filled with future leaders. If you are going to go out of your way to belittle an organization that does so much for their campus or community, make sure you get the facts straight.
