I recently watched “The Daily Show” interview between Trevor Noah and Tomi Lahren, and I was wowed. Here are two young, intelligent people on opposite sides of the political spectrum, agreeing to share their political opinions with one another. The discussion, which covered several topics on the major political issues our country faces currently, was relatively civil as far as political discussions go. I do admire both talk show hosts and I watch their videos occasionally on Facebook. I could not help but agree with strong arguments given on both sides. First, I give props to Lahren for agreeing to be questioned on the Daily Show in front of Noah’s typical liberal leaning audience. Also, props to Noah for wanting to understand opinions which differ from his and going to the direct source for answers. I believe that the biggest take away from this debate is that both sides gave their opinion and were open to trying to understand the differing viewpoints.
The point of this article is not to be about political issues or which argument was right, but to consider making a change in the way we think to better our nation. This politically centered interview left me questioning what happened to basic respect for humans of all kinds? Especially after the recent election, it seems as though the country is deeply divided by politics, by race, by sexuality, or by religion. We are looking too far into labels and disregarding the human beings behind those labels. I understand that people may never see eye to eye in every situation, but frankly, people are being too ignorant to even try. I find it very rare that people would take the time to open their mind to another opinion or take the time to educate themselves about someone with a different life than theirs.
Our fear and ignorance is getting in the way of our respect towards others which is why I find the lesson behind Noah’s interview with Lahren significant. Like Noah and Lahren did, we should consider taking the time to sincerely want to understand different points of views. As well, we should be open to discussing our own viewpoints with those who are curious so we can properly inform them. I am not saying that if we do this there will never be a political debate again and the world will live in peace. However, if we educate ourselves and inform others, perhaps there will be less hurt, ignorance, and fear throughout our own nation. This could allow us to have more respect for everyone.
It should be a social responsibility of all citizens to not be ignorant of other cultures, lives, and viewpoints surrounding them. America is a large melting pot and a nation of immigrants. Our nation will not be successful and thriving if we continue to be intolerant of unique perspectives. Especially in today’s world where globalization is increasing continuously. I wish it could be as easy as saying everyone has their own opinions and we should respect everyone, but it is not that easy because at the end of the day someone’s opinion becomes the law. Either way, it should be easy to say we need less ignorance in our nation and more courtesy towards one another.
