In a world made up of roughly 4,200 different religions, and a perpetual amount of conspiracy theories, I chose to believe in mermaids. Yes mermaids, full tail and consumed by the great depths of the ocean. This isn’t a hoax or a stride for attention, I truly do believe in mermaids. No, mermaids have never been seen. No, there has never been concrete evidence on their existence, but neither does god. The way I see it is if you can be a loyal follower of FSM, or the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster (yes it is real and has thousands of worshipers) then I can believe in mermaids. Much like the four thousand two hundred or so religions, I too have logic to support my belief.
1. How can you be certain they aren’t real?
Personally speaking, I have not treaded the bottom of every ocean and seen the entirety of the sea. If you have, and have not seen one single mermaid then I offer you my deepest apologies. However, if you are not a fish and do not have time time or resources to personally discover every inch of the ocean, that engulfs approximately 75% of our earth, then you too can be a believer!
2. The Aquatic Ape Theory
Let me back up my theory with some science. Mammals have altered throughout evolution. Human’s most basic form of life was in a underdeveloped state and could easily be changed. The hunt for food was either done on land looking for other animals, or in the water fishing. The most common evolutionary theory was that humans evolved from apes. I chose to believe that not all homosapians were stuck on land and that some moved toward the water. These select groups would exclusively hunt fish and develop adaptations which would better their lives on and in the water. This hopefully makes enough sense for my skeptics to wrap their heads around, I presume. TL;DR : this theory is stating that humans all lived on land, but the tribes that chose to hunt predominantly in the aquatic regions developed adaptations that would aid in the water over a long period of time.
3. Humans themselves are evidence
The theory sounds more logical than the blunt statement “mermaids are real”, but we ourselves are evidence. Humans can have many different features than other mammals do. For example, check your hands. Almost everyone has at least a slight degree of webbing around the base of their hand between each finger. Even moreso, some people are born with the mutant condition of an extreme amount of webbing between each finger, and require surgery to remove this webbing. Where would this come from? Surely not from our gorilla ancestors. No, this has no other possible source other than an aquatic or at least amphibious ancestor. Humans sweat out salt. Many mammals have features that enable them to conserve salt. Humans can hold their breath for long periods of time that other animals could not do. Humans have flexible spines that could assist in gliding through the water that other land animals could not do.
