Grey’s Anatomy has been a show beloved by its fans for many, many years. Going on it’s twelfth seasons, the series’ characters have suffered through intense drama, heartaches, and losses. However, some characters have experienced more than others. Meredith Grey and Alex Karev have been through a lot together. But did you expect them to ever fall in love, maybe spark a romantic relationship? Here are a few reasons why Meredith and Alex should end up together when the show comes to an end.
They know everything about each other:
We all know Cristina is supposed to be Meredith’s person, but what about Alex? Meredith and Alex are the last two remaining original interns from season one. They’ve been through almost everything together. They’ve helped each other out on medical cases, personal problems, etc. They know when the other person has slept with someone in the on-call room or they know when the other has scored a rare and exciting surgery. These two hardly keep secrets from each other because in the end, they know that each other is all they’ve got.
They're best friends:
Now with Cristina gone, Meredith has turned to Alex. The pair often help each other out with their personal and relationship problems. Whenever something bad happens to Meredith, Alex is always there for her. For example, when Meredith was attacked by a patient in an episode a few weeks back, Alex was there to help her get through the rough hospital stay and cheer her up along the way.
They've both suffered extreme heartache:
It’s safe to say Meredith has been through the wringer and back again. Her mother, stepmother, sister, friends, and husband have all died. She’s also suffered through a plane crash, a drowning, her best friend leaving, and a hospital shooting. Alex was involved in some of these tragic events, but he’s also had several relationship problems that usually do not turn out for the better. Izzy left him unexpectedly, Rebecca went crazy, Lexi left him, and now Jo won’t speak to him. Meredith and Alex understand what the other one is going through most of the time, even if Meredith’s losses might be a bit more extreme. Not to mention, they are both surgeons who have come across several patient deaths.
They have on screen chemistry:
Meredith and Alex’s on screen chemistry could easily be developed into a relationship or romantic connection. In past episodes, Alex has been paying more attention to Meredith, which leads the audience to believe that some feelings may be sparking between the two of them. Could it be true?
They're original characters:
As said before, Meredith and Alex are the last two original interns from season one. We want to see them end up happy in the end, of course. So what better way to end the series, but with a surprise twist on a budding romance between best friends who’ve been through everything together.
They understand each other:
Meredith and Alex work at the same hospital, so they understand what it’s like to have a busy schedule and not know when the other is going to come home or how long their shift is. They understand how time consuming being a surgeon is. And most importantly, they understand the heartache that comes with the job.
With it’s many twists and turns, Grey’s Anatomy never ceases to disappoint. The fate of all the characters on Grey’s Anatomy, including Meredith and Alex, all belongs in the hands of the woman we all hate, but love at the same time, Shonda Rhimes. Let’s hope there isn’t a huge twist where everyone is killed off in a big hospital explosion. Boy, would that we a surprise ending for the ages.
