As Memorial Day quickly approaches and we gear up for our annual cookouts and beach trips, I think it is appropriate to step back and appreciate the true meaning of the holiday we are celebrating. We all know that the 4th of July is the celebration of our country's freedom, which yields celebrations, but many underestimate the importance and sacrifice this holiday holds. I encourage you to carry on with your traditions and to enjoy your family and friends this holiday, but to remember the fallen and to thank those currently serving. While Memorial Day is seen as your long weekend full of summer fun, it is a military family's day of mourning. Join me in thanking those who have served and continue to serve this weekend.
To the soldier who has passed:
You are the representation of a true American. You saw it necessary to lose your life in order for me to have mine. I know this was not a part of your plan, but thank you for offering your life for the possibility of death. You are worth so much to the lives of all Americans and the definition of a true hero. I honor and admire you and hope to be the man/woman you were. Your strength, courage, and willingness to serve has proven a necessity to the success of our country. Thank you for your sacrifice.
To the soldiers fighting today:
Thank you for your unselfish willingness to serve your country. We as Americans tend to view our freedom as an entitlement when it is truly something we do not deserve.Thank you for willingly putting your life on the line every single day in order to keep our country safe and protected. It is true that freedom does not come free. Thank you for your service.
To the families of those who have and currently serve:
You are the unsung heroes of the American people. You are underestimated and rarely appreciated. I am thankful for your sacrifice at home to allow your soldiers to be away. You are a part of this battle as much as your soldier. Keep fighting on the home-front.
Thank you to all who have and continue to serve. You are a blessing to our country! To those who will never feel their homeland beneath their feet again, I salute you. May God bless you.
