Your weekend starts with a drive through all of the vacation areas of Cape Cod (Provincetown is located at the very tip). Make a game of counting all of the cabins, retreats, and signs for fresh lobster. Oh, look: t-shirts for less!
As you get closer to Provincetown, you will see marshland on your right, transitioning to sand dunes and uniform little summer houses to your left. Everything looks picture perfect for a postcard.
Because the town has a population around 3,000 (which you will notice once you get in), you might have some trouble finding any free parking. Be sure to get a parking pass ahead of time. Once you park, however, there is no need to use your car.
Provincetown is like a (very) scaled down San Francisco, and the hills are much more manageable and away from the "center." You are a short walk away from all of the colorful buildings, unique shops, and various restaurants boasting fresh seafood. It's so perfectly set up that you will wonder if you are actually on a movie set and there is really nothing behind that flowery gate or that basement doorway.
It is no secret that like San Francisco, Provincetown is also an LGBTQ+ friendly place. As such, during Memorial Day weekend all of the gays come out to play. In addition to feeling like you are on a movie set you will probably feel like you are in an alternate reality movie where the societal "norm" is to be queer rather than straight, with many couples freely holding hands as they walk down the street.
Another aspect of P-town that will leave you wondering if you are in heaven is the amount of dogs being walked around. If you are a dog lover this is definitely the place for you!
If you like to sprawl on the beach and not necessarily get in the cool May water, you can live vicariously through the puppies chasing each other and their ball through it near the several piers.
There are plenty of water sports and activities to enjoy, too. Including but not limited to: boat cruises, whale watching and parasailing.
There will be a lively nightlife, inclusive of everyone, if that is your scene, and during the day you will also see entire families enjoying a stroll through the main street, Commercial Ave. If you like history, there are several monuments and museums you can check out, as well as the local architecture. You can even stay in historical buildings that retain their original ceiling beams and barn ladders. There is something for everyone.
In short, Provincetown is a lovely place to spend any kind of weekend, and you would do well to add it to your list!
