I am still bitter that I'm not currently preparing for my own Royal wedding. Yet, here I am, brewing coffee at 1 am, shaking with excitement to watch Meghan Markle walk down the aisle to wed Prince Harry. Since I am an avid follower of celebrity families worldwide, I have prepared for this morning. I have been watching the countdown all week, and am so excited for their day.
To get started, here are some need-to-knows about this popular couple and their big day:
- Meghan is not only American, but she is also half-black, liberal, and a divorcee. She was married to American Film Producer Trevor Engelson from 2011 - 2013. Meghan is really bringing some modernness to both this family and her wedding.
- Prince Harry is the second most popular in the Royal Family - behind Queen Elizabeth II herself. This is because he is seen to be as the "Relatable Royal" - he's gotten in trouble for underage drinking and social media, attended a University, travelled after graduating from his higher education, joined the Household Cavalry as a second lieutenant, toured in Afghanistan for two months, and became an Apache helicopter pilot in the Army Air Corps - all while continuing his mother's charities along aside his brother, Prince William, after their mother's death in 1997.
- Their love story.. *swoon* Harry is a lucky Royal, being allowed to marry by choice rather than an arrangement. Harry and Meghan met when they were set up on a blind date by a friend. Immediately during the first date, they knew they wanted to spend the next day together. Living in different countries and both with busy schedules, they knew it would be difficult. However, the gap in their schedules was just “at the perfect place,” as Prince Harry says.
- With only 1,900 guests, it was a more an intimate wedding rather than a state wedding, like Prince William and Kate Middleton’s. Yet, the wedding still cost around $43 million - with 94% of that cost being towards security alone.
- During the ceremony, a Gospel choir brought life to every hymn they sang. However, Reverend Michael Curry stole the show as the royal preacher.
- How obvious it is that the two are completely smitten with each other. Everyone watching the ceremony could tell by their genuine expressions and constant smiles.
Harry and Meghan's official titles are the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Why the Queen chose this:
- Sussex is a rural county in south-east England, best known for its English Channel seaside resorts. As of today, Sussex is known as a historic county.
- This title has not been used in the 1800s when it was given to only a Duke: August Frederik. Frederik was the ninth child of King George, had two illegal marriages, supported the abolition of slavery, Catholic emancipation, and the removal of civil restrictions on Jews.
- Meghan will be the first ever Duchess of Sussex since neither of Frederik’s wives was titled as the marriages were not approved by King George.
- Frederik was known to be a "modern man" during his time period. I believe the Queen chose this title to reflect how modern Harry and Meghan are each individually and as a couple.
Tributes to Harry's mother, Princess Diana:
- Meghan’s bouquet included a special touch of flowers, hand-picked by Harry from his mother’s garden, the morning of the wedding.
- Meghan’s ring is made up of a large center stone from Botswana, as well as two other stones from Princess Diana’s collection.
- The hymn, sung by a Gospel choir at the ceremony, "Guide Me, O Thou Great Redeemer" was Princess Diana’s favorite. It was a touching addition, especially when Harry teared up during the performance of the hymn.
Meghan received a lot of voice in this wedding, bringing her own touch into the ceremony. Here's what she did:
- Meghan was able to invite a number of friends, who happened to be American celebrities, to the ceremony. These noteworthy friends included: Oprah Winfrey, Elton John, George Clooney, David and Victoria Beckham,
- She spoke up. Two major moves Meghan made on her own was that she gave herself away, and took the "I will obey" portion out of her vows.
- Meghan didn’t have a Maid of Honor. She couldn’t choose between her closest friends, so she had only the children.
THE DRESS. Let's talk about it:
- Meghan’s wedding dress was a simple and pure dress designed by Claire Waight Keller for Givenchy. The dress, with a wide boat neck, long sleeves, and a beautiful sweeping train, has been described to be pure and sculptural.
- For jewelry, she wore no necklace with beautiful diamond studs, with natural makeup.
- Her 16-foot veil is a whole other beauty with connections to the Commonwealth. Meghan’s headpiece is made from silk tulle with over 53 flowers, hand-embroidered, to represent the counties in the Commonwealth, as well as with crops of wheat to symbolize love and charity. The veil was held in place by the Queen Mary Diamond Bandeau tiara, lent to Meghan for her wedding by Queen Elizabeth.
And so, another Royal Wedding has passed. I am so excited to live vicariously through Harry and Meghan’s lovely lives and union until the next. Cheers!
