The Odyssey chapter at the University of San Francisco was just launched this past year, but our team are no amateurs. We have established a great group of writers who continually publish amazing work. As we become more established, we thought it was time for our readers to get an inside look at our team, one person at a time. So this week we have decided to feature a member of our team, the Contributing Editor, Tin Dinh.

Meet Tin!

Name: Tin Dinh

Hometown: Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Major/year: Graphic Design and Computer Science; Sophomore

Favorite song at the time: "Empires Attraction" by Matt Corby

Spirit fruit and why: Strawberry. I'm not too sure why... Buzzfeed told me.

Why did you decide to join the Odyssey team?

It was by chance that I got to join the Odyssey team. I saw it as an internship opportunity, went through a few rounds of interviews, and got the position.

What are some things that you value as a member of the Odyssey team, specifically being the contributing editor?

Being a part of the team from the very beginning, I am humble and proud to have witnessed how far the team has come. When Amelia, our editor in chief, and I received our positions, we pretty much were given a blank canvas. We did not know what to do with it, but we knew that we could turn that blank canvas into something beautiful. Odyssey has become a platform for students to express their opinions, but more than that, it is proof that the USF student body consists of great minds.

Can you name an article that you've written that meant a lot to you and why?

This is a hard question. I treat my articles as my babies… but I will have to say that “Thoughts Of The Gayest Straight Guy” and “My Love Letter To You” hold special places in my heart. “Thoughts Of The Gayest Straight Guy” gave me a chance to touch on a number of relevant issues (e.g., the stereotypes of different sexualities, the objectification of man and woman and what it truly means to a person who lives with value). These are very real topics that are somewhat sensitive; therefore I want this article to be a conversation-starter. As for the latter, I wanted it to be a simple way to remind everyone of our very core human value: love. I don’t think we express it as much as we should, especially in the modern society we live in, so I want this article to be a reminder that no matter who you are and what kinds of horrible things you have done, somebody out there loves you (me).

What would you tell someone wanting to join the Odyssey team?

Join us. If you have a brain and a heart, we want you. This is a platform where you can be the person you want to be and put it into words. We want to see your intelligence and passion and let you show it to the world.

What is one thing you want to tell the USF community about yourself?

I like coffee, so if you like coffee too, let’s grab some together!

Check Tins articles out here and give him a follow on Instagram @tinnydinny. Also, if you are interested in becoming a part of the Odyssey team at the University of San Francisco, fill out an application here. We look forward to expanding our team with more amazing writers.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
