Evan is a sophomore at the Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, NY. A new writer for the Odyssey, his articles often focus on political issues, and making his readers laugh at his witty satire.
Where are you from?
Albany, New York.
What’s your major?
I’m a double major in Political Science and Media and Society.
Why did you want to write for the Odyssey?
I really like to write satire, and did it a lot in high school. When I got the opportunity to write whatever I want every week, I thought that was pretty cool. I also want to get better at writing, because I want to help my mom write a book someday. She’s been a hospital nurse for 35 years, so she has some pretty crazy stories, and I think it would be really cool to make that into a book.
What do you like to write about the most?
If I had more time, I would love to do more political analysis because that’s what I’m most interested in. I just don’t have a lot of time nowadays to read a lot of political information and deeply analyze it. Like I said before, I really like to write satire as well. I like making people laugh.
What’s your favorite book?
The Promise of a Pencil by Adam Braun.
What has your favorite college class been so far?
Latin American Perspectives with Colby Ristow. It was just really different. The whole class was about observing historical events from different perspectives. So, for example, we learned about Christopher Columbus, but from the perspective of Latin American’s. It was really interesting because you see how not everybody has the same opinion on certain historical events.
What’s your favorite vacation spot?
My favorite place to spend my summers is Lake George in New York. I work up there, and it’s just awesome. It’s the best place ever. My favorite vacation was a trip to Costa Rica. I went with a friend in high school, and it was great. The country itself isn’t as poor as you would think. There are some countries you go to, and you can’t really leave the resort, because as soon as you do you’re surrounded by poverty.
Any other interesting facts you’d like to share?
Nope. I’m not very good at anything; I’m average at a lot of things.
