Owning a full-time business at 19, while also studying full time at the University of Texas is no easy work. Read more below to get some inside details on the business, and find out how Matthews balances his job and schoolwork.
Question: When/How did you decide you were going to start a business?
Matthews: I decided to start a business when I saw the growing need and demand for efficient, affordable, and reliable iPhone repair services. Since the demographics have been mainly high school and college-aged students, there was a lot of cracked screens to be fixed. It started out originally as a hobby, just making money on the side. Then I saw the opportunity to legitimize it, so I established iGoRepair as a sole-proprietorship.
Question: How did you learn to fix screens?
Matthews: The first iPhone I fixed was back in 2012 and it was my very own iPhone 4S. I learned by doing some research online and it took me about four hours to complete the repair, now I can do them at an average time of 20 minutes.
Question: What do you love about the job?
Matthews: What I love most about the job is meeting so many people, everyone has a different story. I got to know hundreds of unique individuals and have networked and made many friends. Through iGoRepair, I have been able to strengthen my communication and interpersonal skills, which is necessary as an entrepreneur.
Question: How do you find time to balance schoolwork and running the business?
Matthews: Balancing schoolwork and the business is definitely tough. Being in the McCombs School of Business here at UT is already a tough course load and leveraging my business has been tough, but I have been able to multitask and get through it. I spend roughly six to eight hours a week ordering parts, booking appointments, repairing the iPhones, checking up on the customers, checking my social media channels, and logging all the information onto my Excel spreadsheet. I have been making sure I only take 12 to 13 hours a semester, so I can have time to do both. I am actually a bit ahead of schedule for my degree, so I will be fine and graduate on time.
Question: In which cities is your business currently located?
Matthews: I am currently located in both Abilene, Texas, and Austin, Texas. I do have plans to expand to Waco and Lubbock next year, so stay tuned for that.
Question: Do you plan on hiring more people to help you in the Austin location?
Matthews: Right now I have no plans to hire anyone to help me in Austin, but I would be open to the idea, would make it a bit easier to leverage the Austin area since there’s a lot of demand here.
Question: Where do you see yourself with this business in the future?
Matthews: I plan to run this business until Apple just stops making vulnerable screens that crack easily. As long as screens are able to be cracked, there will always be demand for iPhone repair. Even when I land a Fortune 500 company job once I graduate, I will still run this on the side.
Question: In terms of a minimum-wage job, would you say this is much more economically beneficial to you?
Matthews: This job is way more beneficial to me than a minimum-wage job. I get to work my own hours and I am my own boss. The pay is good because I set my own prices and can make what I want. I get out what I put in, how much I make is dependent on how aggressive I marketed that week.
Question: How can students in need of repairs contact you?
Matthews: Students can contact us for an iPhone repair through our website at www.igorepair.net or can reach us on our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/iGoRepair.
