How Meditation Changed My Life

As people, we tend to consume ourselves with the chores of daily life: going to work, caring for our family, caring for our home. By the time the day is over, you do not know which way you are going, as long as it leads you to a bed. Unfortunately, ce la vie, but there is no reason that life should make you tired and stressed. There is a way to bring peaceful happiness into your life.

Start by beginning your day before the world does. Wake up between 4-5 am. Yes, it will be hard in the beginning, but you will get used to it. At this time, the world is quiet, and there is this serenity in being the only one up in the world before the sun has even set its rays into the night sky. It is at this time that you drink a cup of water to wake your body up and get your body moving. Set an incense and do some early morning yoga or meditation.

Personally, I find that early morning shower meditation internalizes the same calming energy that I feel in the world when I first wake up. Since I have been starting my mornings this way (almost a year now) I feel more energized and happy throughout the day! It no longer feels like a chore to have to go to work. Work has become something I enjoy to do. I view the world in a different light. Instead of, "Ugh, I hate work. There are so many other things I could be doing," my thought patterns have become more positive and transformed into, "I am so happy I have a job that allows me to provide for myself. Yes, there are so many other things I have to do, but they've been waiting this long – they can wait a little longer."

It was these simple changes that I made to my routine, drinking more water, waking up earlier, meditating that completely changed my whole perception of the world. That is positive energy. I have found love in bettering myself. I have found love in the beauty that is in the world. And this love has brought me positive energy, so much so that my whole outlook on life has changed.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
