Recently more and more people have been posting picture of #relationshipgoals and the pictures are simply showing guys opening doors for women or holding their hands. Which got me thinking, why are we idolizing these ideas, when they should be the standard. It seems to me that there are more important goal worthy traits to envy. For example:

Someone You Can Trust:

This has got to be the most important ‘goal’ out there. If trust doesn’t exist in the relationship, then there won’t be a relationship. Having a partner you know is not sneaking around or being shady with other people is huge.

Someone Who Challenges You:

A relationship should challenge you to look beyond yourself. Having a partner that makes you want to better yourself in all ways not only for your own sake but for theirs is crucial. Each day should be a growing and learning experience and what a better way to do that then with the person you love.

Someone Who Is Your Best Friend:

This doesn't mean one of the 20 best friends you claim to have. I’m talking the only person in the entire world (other than maybe your mom) who you want to share everything with. They are the first person you tell when something good happens or when something terrible happens. They genuinely want you to succeed for your benefit and not of their own. They have no agenda when it comes to loving you, they make compromises for you, and they care about your happiness as if it was their own.

Someone Who Is Invested In You:

No I don’t mean financially. I am talking investing their time, energy, and love. Which is priceless in comparison to money. You cannot buy someone’s time and love, so don’t take for granted someone who is giving that to you for free.

and last,

Someone Who Respects You:

A relationship should be built with two people who respect one another 100% of the time. If you are not respected in a relationship then you are not being valued. Someone who respects your mind, body and soul is invaluable.

With all of that said, keep in mind these ‘goals’ go both ways. It should never be a one way street in a relationship. So go and find a person who possesses these traits and don’t let go, because they aren’t easy to come by.
