Media & Hollywood Giving Greek Life a Bad Name

Many potential freshmen are filled with the idea of Greek life being despicable and maybe even despiteful due to the media and Hollywood cramming their minds with false information.

Movies, television, and even books, exaggerate the idea of Greek life and portray sorority girls and fraternity boys as self-centered and spoiled beings who turn towards sex and booze as a constant lifestyle choice. Simply put, if you are basing your opinions of Greek life based off the media, then I do not blame you for not wanting to be a part of such an association.

However, the media and even Hollywood could not represent Greek life any more unjustifiably.

Being a part of a sorority for three years now, I am proud to say that my experience with the organization has not only bettered me for my future, but has also molded me in ways that I would have never thought was possible.

If you construct your view of Greek life off of movies, television, and books, then you are being sold false data. If you are the type of person who wants to join one of these organizations on campus solely because of the parties that they throw and the wild nights that they are characterized to have over and over and over again, then you aren't cut out for Greek life. Until you wake up at 5 a.m. on the weekends to volunteer for a Philanthropic event or you spend an entire afternoon doing community service to help those in your community, then you won't understand the passion and love that we have for the association that we are a part of.

We strive to help others. In our community, our philanthropy, and even in our entire Greek life as a whole. We strive to help people feel their best and be their best. Through various leadership opportunities, developing lifelong relationships, and diverse volunteering opportunities, the Greek life is so much more than what the media and Hollywood portrays it to be.

Did you know? The University of Arkansas' Greek life donated over $560,000 to charities in 2012-2013. They performed over 24,000 hours in community service in those years as well, and their overall Greek GPA on campus was a 3.284 for the Fall 2014.

These facts make me proud to be a part of an organization with such high enthusiasm and passion for those around them. And so I will wear my letters with pride, representing the strong women that aid me to being my best self. Here's to Greek life and the dedication that it has to make a positive impact in the world.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
