The time is upon us for many people to make their New Year's resolution(s). In college, it's always good to change things up and focus on improving different aspects of your life. Here are some New Year's resolutions for college students that are not as obvious as get more sleep or eat healthier, but still deserve to be emphasized:
1. "Treat Yo Self"
Academics are by far a student’s number one priority but even the busiest of students need a break from school. Go out for a nice meal once or twice a month. Go to a big concert on campus. Spend a night out with your friends rather than sitting in the library. College is a stress center so it’s important to reward yourself for all that hard work.
2. Step out of your comfort zone.
Join a club or campus organization. Hang out with a new social circle. Whatever it may be, make sure it’s different and make sure you give it a real shot. Do things that you couldn’t have imagined yourself doing a few months ago or in high school, because it really can impact you greatly.
3. Take a class that has nothing to do with your major but catches your eye.
I understand every student must meet a certain amount of credit hours in order to graduate with his/her degree but there are plenty of opportunities to expand your learning. Who cares if it doesn’t help you with what you are studying. Take a class that engages a new side of your learning.
4. Take a leadership position on campus.
Leadership roles are great opportunities for students to challenge their brains in new and exciting ways. You can really take away some very important life skills from holding a leadership role. It also looks great on a resume which is another added bonus.
5. Place a stronger emphasis on school spirit/pride.
There’s a reason why you chose the school you’re at. It’s because it is a place where you can see yourself thrive and a community you want to be a part of. Football and basketball games are already popular events to show off school spirit so start attending some other school events that receive lesser attention.
6. Take more spontaneous off campus trips with your friends.
Being on a college campus, you sometimes can feel like you’re in a bubble. Break out of that bubble every so often and go do something with your friends that aren't just going to a party or sporting event. Even if your campus isn’t located in the most exciting area of the U.S., there’s always something new to do anywhere you are.
7. Focus on living in the now.
Too often college students are consumed by the future. What job they are going to get, who they are going to marry, where they are going to live, etc. College is said to be the four best years of one’s life so take advantage of all it has to offer.
