Maybe You're Just One Of The Strong Ones

Maybe it’s supposed to be this hard for you. Maybe that’s the point.

Maybe You're Just One Of The Strong Ones
Jessica Duncan

“God never gives you anything you can’t handle.” I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard this statement. Crying my eyes out and someone responds with this age old saying that’s meant to give you courage, to help you through whatever it is you’re going through.

The saying is meant to remind you that God equips you with every tool you need to succeed in this life. That He gave you whatever it is you need, to get through whatever situation you’re in.

What I’ve been considering lately though is that what if some of us just have it a little rougher than others for a reason? Everyone handles events in their life differently; some people are tough, some people are weaker in certain situations. That’s just the way we’re wired. It doesn’t make anyone better or worse than anyone else.

Say two people go through a breakup at the exact same time. One person may be over it in a couple weeks and for the other, it may take months or years. Both are justified and valid responses. It just depends on how you as a person handle things.

But think about it this way — do you ever feel like the world just kinda shits on you 90 percent of the time? Sometimes I listen to my friends vent about their problems and I think to myself, “Wow, will the poor girl ever catch a break?” For some people, something happens and it’s literally just like one thing after another after another and I find myself wondering why God does this. Now I know that’s not fair to look at it that way, like blaming Him for whatever is happening, but I just have to wonder why sometimes.

Some people would go with the easy cop out and just reply, “wow you must’ve done something bad to get this bad of karma and deserve all this,” but I reject that thought. I firmly believe that God doesn’t give you anything you can’t handle and He really does have your best interest in mind.

Maybe it’s supposed to be this hard for you. Maybe that’s the point.

Maybe God knows that you’re a fighter and you can get through anything and that’s why He gives you all these lows — because He knows you can take it and He knows you’ll be okay in the end.

Maybe you’re a role model for those who are a little less strong (again not saying there’s anything wrong with that). Maybe you’re there to show others that no matter how much the wind blows at you, you can always get through it.

Maybe there’s something on the other side of this that’s bigger than you can possibly imagine, but you really just have to wait to get there.

You know how people say God holds you back sometimes for a reason?

Like for example, you hit every red light on the way to work today and it made you late and your boss yelled at you and now you’re having an awful day. Maybe God made you late because if you had hit every green light then you would have been passing through that last intersection at the same time as someone that was not paying attention blew right through their red light and that saved your life.

Maybe you’re hitting all your red lights right now and your green is coming and will be amazing, but you just have to wait for it.

Maybe you’re simply one of the strong ones. Nothing will come easy for you. That’s okay.

Because in the end, God has a plan for all of us and all that matters is that something is coming.

He wouldn’t give these lows to you if He didn’t know that you could handle it — so don’t ever doubt your ability to.

And He wouldn’t give you what comes after your green if He didn’t know that you would love it.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
