It's one of the oldest stereotypes in the book. The color of my hair (apparently) determines my volume of intelligence. Leaving me with the over exaggerated belief that because I am blonde, on top of it being a woman, that I must be "ditzy" and lacking in most common sense knowledge.
Part of it mainly has to do with the television/movie industry. When a female character is created with the intent to have the following characteristics; rich, self-absorbed, and dumb as a doorknob, they have a blonde female play the role.
This stereotype has been around for generations and while it has died down quite a bit over the years, it still lingers quite frequently. You have people that have a dumb moment and refer to it as a 'blonde moment.' Or those that make jokes saying 'they should have been born a blonde.'
I don't get offended by these jokes because, well, they're jokes and they're funny. What I do get offended by is when I get told that I have no common sense because I'm blonde, by strangers.
I know I'm no brain surgeon or mathematician, but I am far from being the "ditz" that my hair color portrays me to be. I don't prefer going to the mall over reading a book. I also don't fall into the stereotype of constantly needing to look my best. I'll walk out of the house in jeans and a sweatshirt with my hair all over the place with no makeup on more than twice a week.
My favorite of the assumptions for blondes is that they think we can't do anything for ourselves and that we have people do it for us because we "just don't know how." I was asking my coworker one day how to use the laptop at our work with the new POS system we downloaded that I was unfamiliar with and a rude customer had stated "she's a blonde you might as well just do it for her."
Just because I am a blonde does NOT make me incapable of doing things myself.
I was beyond angered. I work extremely hard and have for years. To think that people think I'm just a stupid blonde without knowing my intelligence level is frustrating. I've been working to shut down the stereotype for years.
A joke is funny, when it's made serious, it's offensive.
Blonde's have fought long and hard to get their name on a better level on the spectrum. We've come a long way from House Bunny to Legally Blonde levels. While Elle Woods was played off to be a ditz, her level of intelligence got her into law school and winning a rather difficult case in her first year attending.
We are blondes, don't underestimate us.
