"Matilda" is my favorite 90's movies. While most of you haven’t heard of it and many will question my choice, I don’t care. I’m going to tell why it is incredibly underrated.
To begin, it was adapted from the book "Matilda" by Roald Dahl. I’ll bet most of you probably didn’t know that, but that’s fine I’ll forgive you. Yes, he is the same author as "James And The Giant Peach" and "Charlie And The Chocolate Factory." So you can assume it’s going to be a pretty decent, albeit odd, plot.
Secondly, Matilda is frankly an awesome character. Not only is she insanely smart and independent, she can literally control things with her mind. She overcomes many obstacles—which I'll admit all protagonists do—but most obstacles aren’t a “chokey” or a javelin throwing principal. If you’re curious about this then you’ll have to watch the movie, won’t you? Also, Matilda probably read more classic novels than your high school English teacher, so there’s that too
If that wasn’t enough, there is also one of the best songs ever written that happens to be featured in the movie. “Send Me On My Way” by Rusted Root will forever hold a place in my heart. Even though half of the song doesn’t sound like it’s in English, it doesn’t matter. It's that good. If you haven’t heard it, look it up, I guarantee it will remind you of the sweet sounds of childhood.
Also, Bruce Bogtrotter—what a name for a character—also eats an entire chocolate cake in the school auditorium in front of everyone. Oh, and a girl gets swung by her pigtails. How could I forget Matilda super-gluing a hat to her dad’s head? Such good times.
Now, I “Send [you] on [your] way” to go watch it. Ha. See what I did there?
