Marvels Of The English Language
English is one of, if not the most, diverse and versatile language on the planet. With hundreds of millions of speakers worldwide and over one million words in total, it is certainly very prolific across the planet. Originating mostly from Britain around the seventh century, it has a lot of technicalities, ins and outs, and borrows many words from other languages. These things make the language as a whole very confusing to some people, but can also make some very interesting coincidences.
This is a list of some of the most interesting things I could find on the English language.
"Too Bad I Hid A Boot"
This sentence may not make sense in most contexts, but it is still very interesting. It is a palindromic sentence, meaning that if you read it from right to left, it will be the same as if you read it from left to right. This is a short example, but there are many others that other people have found. Including, but not limited to the following:
-Able was I ere I saw Elba
-Was it a car or a cat I saw?
-Rise to vote, sir
-A man, a plan, a canal, Panama!
-Never odd or even
There are a whole lot more of them than just these. You can find long lists of them here and here.
Unlucky Sentences
Basic math tells us that 12 plus one equals 13, and so does 11 plus two. Spell those out, however, and you see something interesting. The phrase “twelve plus one” has 13 letters in it – and those 13 letters can be rearranged to also spell “eleven plus two”.
The longest of its kind
People like to apply certain conditions to words to see what they can make. Hence, I’ve looked through and found a bunch of them to see how long they could get.
"Rhythm” is the longest word that can be spelled without any real vowels
"Typewriter” is one of the longest words you can spell on the top row of a QWERTY keyboard. “Alfalfas” is one of the longest for the middle row, and there are no official words you can spell using only the bottom row.
“Cabbage” is the longest word you can spell using only the letters on the common musical scale.
“Irresponsibilities” (or IrReSPoNSiBILiTiEs) is one of many words that can be spelled using only elements on the periodic table
And although it’s not long and it’s not just one word, the sentence “pack my box with five dozen liquor jugs” is the shortest sentence containing every letter of the alphabet.
