Marvel's Best Christmas Specials

Christmas is never the same without our favorite superheroes

Every year or so, Marvel launches a Christmas special in time for the season. It's usually one of the wackiest storylines with cheesy lines and superheroes guests, but no fan would ever want to miss one. Here are some of the best ones over the years.

1. Gwenpool Special Comic (2015)

It was a smart move for Marvel to cluster all the current female superheroes in one comic. Written by Charles Soule, Gerry Duggan, and Christopher Hastings, they gather all the mismatched superheroes -- Ms. Marvel to Patsy Walker and She-Hulk -- to create a funny little Christmas special. Surprisingly, despite having her name as the title of the comic, Gwenpool is not the center of attention. The comic book starts and centers on She-Hulk and her attempt to save the office building her and unusual superheroes work in by throwing a big superhero party. Along with that story line, the Hawkeyes (Kate Bishop and Clint Barton) save Christmas for a little family and Ms. Marvel stops some bad guys. The solutions are a little cheesy and sometimes over the type, but it's Christmas so for once Marvel could get away with it.

2. Hawkeye # 17 (2012)

Matt Fraction's Clint Barton is a giant mess on the best of days and it's not surprising that even in this mini Christmas special that doesn't change. After accidentally shooting an arrow into his neighbor's tv (don't ask), he invites them to his house to use his. He manages to fall asleep and ends up dreaming up a dog version of the Avengers with weird and obscure winter holiday references. There's plenty of silly moments in the issue that will remind you of the Peanuts comic strips.

3. Marvel Holiday Special Vol 1 (2007) -- "Piece of Cake"

The best thing about this comic is Spider-Man and Wolverine's interaction. The story begins in a way that truly captures these superheroes' personalities. Wolverine is chasing after a psychotic mall Santa that somehow got his hand on a giant killer robot, while Spiderman is just delivering a large cake to his Aunt May's Christmas party. Obviously, when two polar opposite people meet, fireworks happen and these two are no different. Filled with terrible Christmas puns, crazy action scenes, and cakes, it's definitely a Christmas comic worth reading.

4. Marvel Holiday Special (1993) -- "The Spirit of the Season"

The Punisher is not someone you would think as "wholesome" or "kind" or even "morally sound" and his past Christmas specials were no different. He often dressed as Santa, keeping track of those that made it on his naughty list over the years and paid them back with either shooting, stabbing, or setting them on fire. This issue, however, he decided to take the pacifist route. After placing a bet with Micro, Punisher has to find another way to "punish" his enemies this holiday season without making them bleed. And he does: he puts contact poison on his costume.

5. Spiderman's Tangled Web (2002) -- "Twas the Fight Before Christmas"

Nothing is more exciting than having a Christmas special solely focus on Spiderman. This comic book gives the holiday special an interesting twist by including James J. Jameson. He's truly a bastard in his element here. When a group of lost children shows up at his Christmas party, he decides to take them to the mall to witness Spiderman fighting the Puppet Master(who is disguised as Santa Claus). Yup, you can manage how that went down.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
