Remember when you were a kid and you daydreamed about what life would be like with superpowers and what you would do with them? Well, these powers aren't just found in comic books. Some aquatic critters are lucky enough to posses the powers we all wished we had for survival on a daily basis. Here are some marine animals with mind-blowing superpowers!
1. Immortality
Turritopsis Dohrnii, otherwise known as the "Immortal Jellyfish," this underwater critter is one of the only animals lucky enough to be classified as biologically immortal. This jellyfish comes with a reset button that, when faced with illness or injury, it can revert its old cells to a younger state. This three day process is called transdifferentiation and it allows the jellyfish to grow into adulthood all over again, making it virtually immortal.
2. Super Strength
The Peacock Mantis Shrimp is not one to be messed with. This "Man of Steel" of the underwater world is armored with deadly appendages that can send a world of hurt to anything that comes face to face with them. Its punch can reach the speed of a .22 caliber bullet, about 50 times faster than the blink of an eye.
3. Electricity
This freshwater creature is know to shock the life out of its prey and potential predators. The Electric Eel has rows of electroplates lining its body that can discharge 600 volts of electricity.
4. Regeneration
No limb no problem, starfish are able to regrow any limb they lose. The regeneration process can take months and even years but it's all worth it in the end. Oddly enough, the limbs the starfish lose are actually able to grow a whole other body!
5. Adaption
If there's no food in the ocean than this predator simply moves into freshwater territories more abundant with potential prey. Bull sharks have a unique ability to store salt in their bodies which allow them to travel into rivers and lakes for food. This allows the bull shark to be one of the only shark species that can hunt in fresh water.
6. Camouflage
Not only is this animal a master of disguise, it is also an ingenious shapeshifter. The mimic octopus can change colors to blend into their environment like other octopi, but what sets them apart is how they mimic the shapes and movements of other marine animals. It can mimic the appearance of a lion fish or sea snake to ward off predators. Likewise, it can trick a crab by resembling an available mate, only to devour the misled suitor.
