If you know this date by heart, then you're definitely a Phi Mu. This date has been burned into your head since the day you became a Phi. You know it forwards and backwards and you are excited for the day that you wake up and see "March 4th" on your calendar. It is the day that the second oldest sorority in the nation came about at Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia. Today we can't help but celebrate the 164 years of love, honor, and truth that Phi Mu has brought to the world.
Mary, Mary and Martha would be so proud.
I like to think that if Phi Mu founders, Mary Ann (Dupont) Lines, Mary Elizabeth (Myrick) Daniel, and Martha Bibb (Hardaway) Redding, were here today, they would be beyond proud of what Phi Mu has become. What started out as a Philomathean Society (literary society), has grown into something larger than life. Here are three simple reminders for why you should be just as proud as our founders to be apart of Phi Mu.
1. Phi Mu raises over $500,000 for CMNH every year.
Phi Mu's national philanthropy is Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. Each year, Phi Mu raises over $500,000 for CMNH and has contributed over eight million dollars . Our creed begins with "To lend to those less fortunate a helping hand," and that is what we do. It is who we are. We have hearts for helping others and Phi Mu gives us the opportunity to be apart of an organization that makes a difference in children's lives in the 170 Children's Miracle Network Hospitals nationwide.
2. Our values reflect who we are.
In 1916, Phi Mu's Creed was adopted at the National Convention. Our Creed is a way of life. The meaning behind the words is how all of us should strive to live. I know personally, that when saying our Creed out loud, I may mix up a couple words and lower my voice when it gets to "To be to others what we would they would be to us," but the Creed is one of the main things that I love about Phi Mu. I believe that "practicing day by day Love, Honor, Truth," really has preserved the meaning, spirit and reality of Phi Mu.
3. They are half of my heart, they are worth far more than gold. They are kind, they are true, they are my Sisters in Phi Mu.
During recruitment, the first thing that I was looking for in a sorority was friendships...and boy did I get way more than I expected. I have found the girls who are willing to give you the shirt off their backs. I have found the girls who will inspire you and push you to be the best version of yourself. What I have found in Phi Mu is greater than any friendship. I found a sisterhood. Les Soeurs Fideles. I have found my faithful sisters.
So here's to 164 years of Phi Mu. Here's to the 175,000+ Phi Mu women. But more importantly, here's to the many more years and many more Phi Mu women that are to come. LIOB, sistas.
