I am one of the people I know who is both introverted and extroverted. I can talk to anyone I could ever want to, but in random moments, I get shy and quiet. I was worried about going to college simply for the fact that I really did not know anyone when I started a few weeks ago. I was concerned, like many other people, what I was going to do, who I was going to spend my time with, and especially worried about who I would eat my next meal with (because, duh, food takes priority in every situation). However, going to college and jumping in head first was exactly what I have chosen to do, and, so far, it has worked out for the best. Here is a fun little guide on how you can maximize your friend group your first few weeks of school, and hopefully for the next few years.
1. Join groups you have interests in. Nothing is permanent, but this is a great way to find new friends. My hall I am designated to live on this year is full of honors college kids, just like me, and we have spent many nights goofing around, playing Spoons, and just having a good laugh. Look for a community that will suit your personality.
2. Be open. I know this is a popular trend within my articles, but I obviously can't stress it enough. Be open to new people talking to you, and you talking to them. You never know who might be around the corner. Being open to interacting with new people is attractive. Be you, be kind, be open.
3. Smile. Again, repetitive, I know, but just smile. Be happy. There will be nights where you want to go home, see your family, and just feel lost without the safety of your hometown. Trust me, it gets easier. Find that group of people who brings out the happiness in you, and find that group who will cheer you up when you are down. I found that group, and they have saved me nights of sitting in my dorm alone where I would have just been sad, to actually getting out there and having fun.
4. Have fun. Simply put, go out for ice cream, watch movies, go to the mall. Do whatever, as long as you are getting out there and meeting new people.
5. Do not forget to study. A lot of my friends are taking similar classes, or we have the same majors, so try and use that to your advantage. Ask others for help, offer others help. It's the give and take.
As a Freshman in college, I definitely do not know what all is going on, but I do know a few things. I hope that this article can help take the edge off of the newness of college, and I hope you love your University as much as I love mine.
