It seems like every day more and more women (and men) turn to the likes of makeup to enhance their physical features. Although the concept of blending foundations and lining lips is far from new, there is no question that the dependency and popularity of makeup has become eye-opening. So much so, in fact, that memes and videos have swept all across Instagram and social media everywhere, distinguishing just how far this trend has gone.
The truth is – the use of makeup
has become one of the biggest epidemics of this generation. I must add, I too often, find myself palleting my eyes and accentuating my lashes when only a few years ago, I would have laughed hysterically at the thought. The more I begin to ask myself about this sudden change the answer becomes quite simple – social norms have changed drastically.Back track a few years prior and society was fixated with the idea of household wives and gayness being a disease. As the world continues to progress with our nation's leading lady being fearlessly as successful in her own right and announcements of constitutional same-sex marriages, why is it so hard to accept the growing fascination of makeup?
Well, I believe the answer isn't as simple as it looks (no pun intended). The reason why makeup trends are much harder to understand and accept is because people have become so skilled at painting their face – and body – that there has become an over-emphasis on one's appearance over their morality, ethicality and personality.
Aside from plastic surgery, it's scary to analyze how much makeup can alter one's appearance to the point where their beauty becomes fallacy. In addition, it's even more terrifying to watch the amount of praise given to those with a "beat face" over those actually changing lives.Instead, social media models are being born every day. Likes are equalizing with worth and much needed practical jobs are being traded in for the hopes of being a socialite.
While I'm not attesting that makeup is anyway an unholy testament of life, I am, however, stating that it's time to tune it down. A lot. It has become too easy for females, in particular, to question their worth based on their appearance because society has already gained expectations of arched brows and highlighted cheeks.
More obviously, I would hate to live in a world that revolves solely around outer appearances and where physical features become the number one association with insecurities. While makeup lovers may stand firm in their belief, all I'm urging is that we learn to holistically love our natural features twice as much as we rely on these disguises.
And yes, that is more easily said. But, it's alarming to think about the future of makeup when it has already inhabited faces everywhere. So, how about allowing your face some breathing time and encouraging most, the person under the mask.
