Every school has them, every group has them. Most likely you're the one who has changed your major once or more, or maybe your closest friends have. It's one thing to start with some sort of healthcare major and change your major to another field in healthcare. It is a totally different thing to go from being a healthcare major to a business major. It is a total 180, but plenty of people do it.
You start freshman year so excited to delve into the big bad world of college, to get to chem class early on the first day, to meet with your advisor about all the med-type classes you'll be taking and, eventually, arriving at nursing school. You are proud to tell people that you're a nursing major because of the prestige, but soon you're already through your first semester and realize it isn't all it's cracked up to be. You realize maybe you don't want to spend the next few decades in a hospital with dreary white walls and hard cold floors. You want to see the world, you want to have endless opportunities, you want flexibility. The business world starts to fascinate you more and more.
You begin to see your career choice of a nurse as a weight, as something you feel obligated to do because you've already told all these people your intended major, and if you tell them you changed to business they will look at you differently. You don't want to be seen as a failure in your family, or to those around you. But here's the thing -- you won't. This is your life and you have to be the one to live that life, day after day, to wake up every morning and go to that job. So do what your little heart desires. I promise it will be okay.
That is what people tend to forget. We forget that it will be okay in the end. We forget that it's okay to change our minds; it's okay to be ourselves; it's okay to do what we want; it's okay to not have it all figured out; it's okay to take the path that you want. Not the one others chose for you.
Be happy
That should be your number one goal in life. Whatever choice you are making or have to make, the end result should always settle well in your heart. You should be happy at the end of the day. Your parents, your partner, your friends, your teachers, and anyone else close to you, don't have to live with the end results -- you do! It's human nature to want to please people around us, and to feel accepted by them, so we sometimes base our choices in life on what will make others feel good. Stop doing that. While it may seem selfish, you have to look out for number one! You are your number one fan and supporter. So with that being said, chase your dreams!
Live
Life is short and our very next days are not guaranteed. So, if that's the case why would we do something we don't want to do? This is your life; you have to make the choice to live it how you want to live it. You have to make a career decision that you love through and through, one that you're not waking up every day looking forward to Friday. Choose a career that makes every day a Friday.Choose a career that makes you excited to get up every morning and get going with your day. It is so important to live and love the life you choose
Money, money, money
It doesn't settle right when I see someone choose a career simply because it makes tons of money. If you truly love that career field, and that is what you feel you were called to do, and it brings good money then kudos to you! But do not choose a career simply for the money. Your heart will never be in the right place. You will have a degree in something, and a great paying job, but you'll hate it. You will wake up every day resenting the fact that you let someone else choose your life for you, or that you let money take control and make that decision for you.
If you choose something you love, you automatically win. Who cares if it pays big money? You get to wake up and do something you love every single day. You're happier, you have a smile on your face that is genuine. Money cannot buy you you happiness. Some of the richest people are some of the most miserable people because they're doing and living a life someone else decided for them. But someone doing something they love, regardless of the hourly payout, are some of the happiest and carefree peeps.
Just remember -- in the end it's about you! Be selfish. After all, it is your life and your future. Don't let family, or friends, circumstances, or money decide anything for you.
Like the wonderful and brilliant Dr. Seuss said, "You have brains in your head, and feet in your shoes, you can steer yourself in any direction you choose!"
