Besides all of the decorations and the constant carols on the radio, you just know it's Christmas when there are holiday movies constantly on TV, specifically channels Hallmark and Freeform. Here is a list of movies that I firmly believe that everyone should see during the holiday season. Grab your peppermint hot cocoa and sit by the open fire, it's time to watch 25 days of Christmas magic!
1. "The Holiday Calendar" (2018) dir. by Bradley Walsh
What better movie to kick off our December advent movie calendar than a story about a magical advent calendar? Plus, it stars Kat Graham and if you don't miss her in "The Vampire Diaries" as lovable witch Bonnie Bennett than you are in denial. Graham has no magic powers of her own in this, but it is a pretty cute Christmas movie that tackles following your dreams (even when your family constantly pesters you to work at their law firm).
2. "Elf" (2003) dir. by Jon Favreau
Whoever doesn't like this movie is a cotton-headed ninny muggins. Syrup and spaghetti isn't that appetizing, but this movie is actually hilarious.
3. "The Year Without A Santa Claus" (1974) dir. by Jules Bass and Arthur Rankin, Jr.
I have watched this multiple times throughout the month of December for as long as I can remember. You won't be disappointed.
4. "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" (2000) dir. by Ron Howard
I can quote this movie word for word as I performed in it for a school play. It's hard to not love this movie with the combination of Jim Carrey and the entertaining jokes.
5. "A Christmas Story" (1983) dir. by Ron Howard
Not one of my favorites, yet still a classic. Just watch it.
6. "A Christmas Prince" (2017) dir. by Alex Zamm
Cheesy, cliche, and magical? Yep, that's a Netflix Christmas movie! I really only watched this because Rose McIver plays the leading lady and while you could always predict the next scene, it still made your heart all tingly when the Christmas magic happens. Follow with "A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding" for viewing pleasure.
7. "Home Alone" (1990) dir. by Chris Columbus
Because whose dream wasn't to be left home alone to eat dessert for breakfast and do "grown-up things?" Plus, Kevin shows the Wet Bandits who is boss. Follow up with the sequels or don't. Really only the second one is worth the watch.
8. "Jack Frost" (1998) dir. by Troy Miller
Is this considered a Christmas movie? Did they even talk about Christmas? Well, it's about a snowman in winter and even though his name isn't Frosty, it's close. A real tear-jerker. Especially if you love Stevie Nicks. Watch with tissues.
9. "A Charlie Brown Christmas" (1965) dir. by Bill Melendez
Only half an hour, but 30 minutes of Charlie Brown goodness. Plus, who doesn't love sassy Sally?
10. "Enchanted Christmas" (2017) dir. by Terry Cunningham
Please watch if you ever watched "Spy Kids" or "Big Time Rush." Alexa PenaVega and Carlos PenaVega are married in real life and star in this Hallmark movie that has some smooth dance moves. Makes my cliche heart tingle.
11. "Jingle All the Way" (1996) dir. by Brian Levant
Let's be honest, who wouldn't go to certain lengths to get their child one specific toy for Christmas? Arnold Schwarzenegger is no exception. Get that Turbo-Man, Arnold, get it for your son.
12. "The Grinch" (2018) dir. by Yarrow Cheney and Scott Mosier
While I have only seen the trailer so far, the remake looks like it lives up to its original so far in means of comedy. I am ready for Max to star as Rudolph!
13. "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" (1964) dir. by Larry Roemer
Speaking of Rudolph, he has a shiny nose that makes him different than the other reindeer so he is basically shunned. Deeper meaning? Perhaps.
14. "The Princess Switch" (2018) dir. by Michael Rohl
Basically the plot of "The Parent Trap" and "Lizzie McGuire: The Movie," but with Vanessa Hudgens. Am I still gonna watch it? You bet your sweet bippy I am.
15. "Mickey's Twice Upon a Christmas" (2004) dir. by Theresa Cullen, Carole Holliday, and Matthew O'Callaghan
C'mon, it's Mickey and the gang, who wouldn't watch this around Christmas time?
16. "The Santa Clause" (1994) dir. by John Pasquin
I definitely never thought of the duty of Santa being passed from one man to the other, but it works well for a plot. Season with sequels.
17. "Christmas with the Kranks" (2004) by Joe Roth
Christmas can get a tad stressful, the Kranks just want a break, but it seems like the universe won't have that.
18. "Holiday in Handcuffs" (2007) by Ron Underwood
Sounds kinky. It's not. I promise.
19. "The Polar Express" (2004) dir. Robert Zemeckis
In elementary school, we all dressed in pajamas and watched this movie on the last day before winter recess. I still dress in my Christmas onesie and put this on.
20. "Barbie in the Nutcracker" (2001) dir. by Owen Hurley
I thrived on Barbie movies when I was little.
21. "A Christmas Carol" (2009) dir. by Robert Zemeckis
Bah humbug. I also can cite this word for word as I was the Ghost of Christmas Future in middle school. All I had to do was walk around and point.
22. "Miracle on 34th Street" (1947) dir. by George Seaton
I have never seen with my pupils, but people tell me it's cute. One day I'll get around to watching it.
23. "Nightmare Before Christmas" (1993) dir. by Henry Selick
Can double as a Halloween movie or a Christmas movie. My two favorite holidays together? Yes, please.
24. "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town" (1970) dir. by Jules Bass and Arthur Rankin, Jr.
This movie has background on one of the many portrayals of Santa Claus. Douse in the magic that is Kris Kringle.
25. "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" (1989) dir. by Jeremiah S. Chechik
I watch this with my extremely religious and conservative grandmother and she cackles for hours on end about the jokes no matter how many times she has heard them. Her favorite part is when they all run away from the squirrel in the house.
BONUS: "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" (2005) dir. by Mike Newell
If you know me, you know I had to throw a Potter reference in here eventually. While all the "Harry Potter" movies feature Christmas, the fourth is the most prominent with the Yule Ball. What I wouldn't do to see the wizarding band the Weird Sisters live.
And now that Christmas has come to a close, you prepare for the New Year and all of the resolutions you will never get to. Don't get too hungover on New Year's Eve if you have work the next day. Happy holidays!
