Known for her iconic role in the TV series Elementary, her bold character in the remake of Charlie's Angels and her appearances in also Kill Bill, Chicago and Southland, Lucy Liu is arguably a successful figure in the entertainment industry both on and off of the screen not only as an actress but also a producer and director. But even as she enjoys the wonders of Hollywood, Lucy Liu dedicates much of her time towards charitable work, staying true to her roots.
Growing up as a second-generation immigrant from a modest home, she was reminded by her parents to consider other's situations was "taught that there were children starving in other parts of the world and [she was] lucky to have food on [the] table."
In 1994, Lucy Liu began working with UNICEF, and ten years later in 2004, UNICEF appointed the actress to the status of a UNICEF ambassador. As an ambassador, Lucy Liu has presented speeches in support of UNICEF and has traveled to provide assistance, draw awareness and to witness UNICEF in action. To date, she has already visited Egypt, Pakistan, Lebanon, Haiti, Cote d'Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Peru and Russia.
One of the speeches which Lucy Liu presented addressed the issue of Human Trafficking while at a symposium in Washington D.C. She described the despondent conditions which young girls are subject from trafficking, forced into manufacturing, the sex trade, begging and domestic labor. However, she still expressed some hope for improvements and a decline in human trafficking thanks to the organizations such as UNICEF.
In 2011, Lucy Liu hosted an art exhibition which showcased her own works. Raising over a quarter of a million dollars, she donated the proceeds to UNICEF. In 2006 she visited Pakistan after it had faced an earthquake which left 3.3 million people homeless. As UNICEF was working to reestablish schooling systems for 500,000 children, Lucy Liu had the opportunity to see firsthand how UNICEF was working and to speak with some of the children. While staying in Pakistan, she was one to help package and distribute clothing to displaced families and to assist with immunizations.
Where credit is due, Lucy Liu is an extraordinary role model, who not only succeeds at her career but also takes the time to give back to others.
