Recently, my community had a great loss. Cheryl Ogle, a teacher at Gray Elementary School, passed away last week. She left us with many happy memories, though, and I hope to share one of mine.
Mrs. Ogle was my kindergarten teacher. Seeing as kindergarten is really your first impression of school, your kindergarten teacher can really make or break how you view the rest of your education. I was blessed to have Mrs. Ogle as one of the first teachers in my life.
She shared with my class a love of knowledge and helped us to really appreciate our school. She also encouraged us to show kindness and to have fun while learning at the same time, and she made each student feel special. She really left a lasting impression and touched each and every one of our lives. Without Mrs. Ogle, we wouldn't be the people we are today. I know I wouldn't be where I am today without the love of learning that she gave me.
Mrs. Ogle occasionally used treats and candy as a way to encourage good behavior, as many teachers do. I remember one day she promised me a pack of Smarties when we returned to the classroom. Overeager, as soon as we got back I asked when I would get my Smarties and ignored the fact that she was busy. She told me to wait patiently and that if I asked again, I wouldn't get any. 6-year-old me took this very literally.
So, I waited. And waited. And waited. And eventually, the school day ended. I thought maybe I would get my Smarties the next day, but to no avail. Maybe the next day? I waited patiently for twelve whole years.
Luckily, my mom worked with Mrs. Ogle, so I got to see her fairly often. One day in my senior year of high school, I mentioned to her how that was a fond memory I had from kindergarten and how it always made me laugh. A week later, she sent me an entire bag of Smarties with a note that read, "Smarties--plus interest!"
She was always doing kind things like in the Smarties story and spreading joy wherever she could. There are some people that seem to be glowing and radiant wherever they go, always smiling and making the people around them feel happy just by being in their presence. Mrs. Ogle was one of those people.
She was a ray of sunshine, she was always positive and upbeat, and she loved every single person around her. She was the kind of person who can make your day just by smiling at you. She would have wanted us to spread joy and love everyone just like she did. Though never can truly match her, I hope we can all do our best to love like Cheryl Ogle.
