Why I Loved Being a Conversation Partner

I'm not sure when I would have ever gone to South Korea or China, but meeting people from there was amazing.

One of the best choices I made was signing up to be a conversation partner at my university. I went to the first meeting knowing little to nothing about it. After getting a lot of information about what it means to be a conversation partner I was so excited to sign up. I waited for a little over a week to meet the international students who signed up for my time and day of the week.

Eventually, I found out that I had three girls who signed up for my time slot. I walked into the room not knowing how to pronounce their names, but they were the only three girls there so we figured it out and they told me their “American names” which was what they called themselves so that I could pronounce it easily. I had two girls from South Korea, and one girl from China.

I was nervous at first because I knew it was up to me to keep the conversation going and to help them with any questions they may have about English or about the campus. I quickly realized I had the three sweetest international students I could have ever asked for. They kept up the conversation better than I could and asked me many things about American slang and told me all the differences between the university and where they were from.

They were so kind and even cooked me a Korean dinner. It was a very unique meal with no plates, and we all shared from the same dishes. They told me about their favorite American food which was pizza, I totally agreed with that, it's honestly everyone's favorite.

Meeting them only once a week was not enough time for me, I scheduled to meet with them multiple days throughout the week. I have learned just as much about them as they have about me. Learning about each other’s cultures was so interesting, and being their tour guide around a campus I was barely familiar with myself was very fun to do. It is truly a wonderful experience and it is more than worth your time.

Although I was skeptical about becoming a conversation partner at first, I have now realized it is one of the best things I have done in college. I would 100% suggest signing up to be a conversation partner at your university.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
