Why I Love UNCW Even Though I Haven't "Technically" Started

As I write this, there are only 18 days until I will be moving down to Wilmington, and classes start in 24 days. As somebody who has attended community college for the past three years, I am ready for the "real" college experience. Some of my friends who are also transferring to other universities, however, are scared and nervous to live on campus or even attend a "real college." I'm lucky enough to love my school and campus so much already, even though I've only been to UNC Wilmington four times. Here's why I love it so much.

1. Port City Java

As somebody with a coffee addiction like mine, coffee is always going to be number one on any list. PCJ is located in Randall, the library. My friend just introduced me to this coffee shop the other day, and boy, did I fall in love with it! I had the best latte there that I have ever had in my life. I mean, really, I was talking about it hours after I finished it. I can't wait to spend all of my money there.

2. Burney Center

Now, I know that I probably won't spend too much time actually in Burney since it's more of meeting center and whatnot, but this building is pretty important in my family as it's named after my great uncle, John J. Burney. I'm ecstatic to go to a university that a few of my elder family members have gone to or have had such an influence on campus. Plus, the fountain outside is gorgeous. I definitely see myself studying outside here.

3. Chancellor's

Over 14,000 students attend the Dub, and almost 40 percent live on campus. That's a lot of people. I'm told that around noon, when most of the classes are, Chancellor's is the busiest place as majority of classes are on this walk. As weird as it may sound, I can't wait to walk with my fellow Seahawks—even if it means almost getting run over by bikers or tripping over the bricks.

4. The OLs

When I went to Seahawk Preview Day in March, I was floored by how great the Orientation Leaders were. I felt so welcome and right at home only five minutes into being on campus. I wasn't prepared to commit to UNCW yet as I hadn't heard back from the last school I was waiting on, but as I sat down in Track Coliseum, I knew that I belonged here. After attending Orientation, I also knew that I wanted to be an OL myself. Shout out to OLs Corey, Meghann and Adam for being the best OLs out there!

5. Kenan

As a creative writing major, I will be spending most of the next two years in Kenan Hall. It even has a publishing laboratory for the literary magazine and other forums! When I was there with my advisor and three other transferring classmates, I was so excited. The students even have their own mailboxes in here! Kenan is also home to the film studies lab and is only one of the beautiful buildings that classes are held in.

There are more than five reasons why I love UNCW so much, like the proximity to the beach and how gorgeous campus is in general. I may not be able to call campus "home" yet, but it already feels like it is. I can't wait to move in, make new friends and officially start my life as a Seahawk!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
