Why I Will Always Be A Summer Lake Girl

If only I could be a kid again, enjoying my summer vacations on the lake.

We all have our favorite seasons whether it be fall, winter, spring, autumn, or summer. We enjoy the leaves changing colors, the white snow on Christmas or a cold ice cream on a hot summer day. In my case, summer is the season I look forward to the most.

Sure summer means a break from classes, homework, and tests, but summer is more than just a vacation to me. Living in Chicago we get a short amount of hot weather to enjoy the lake life, tanning, and outside activities. Since it only lasts two to three months we feel the need to pack in all of our fun activities before the cold weather pops up on us. It gives us the chance to do more than winter activities and enjoy the outside life rather than being cooped up inside from the cold.

Summer is my favorite season because of many reasons, but the lake has to be my main reason. I have been a swimmer my whole life and the lake gives me the opportunity to swim and enjoy the outdoors all at the same time. Things such as water skiing, wake boarding, tanning, boating, fishing, scream my name. Anytime I get the chance to get over to the lake I am one of the first to get in the car.

Growing up, my parents had a cabin on lake Geneva. We would spend every weekend in the summer on our boat grilling, swimming, and making the most of our summer weekends. Following that, we would meet up with our fellow lake friends and go on adventures through the woods, make bonfires and play endless amounts of card games. These are the summer nights I will never forget as a kid.

While we had our cabin I always thought about swimming across Lake Geneva. It had always been a dream of mine, but I never thought I could actually do it. One day after a hearty breakfast I decided it was time so I put on my swim cap, tighten my goggles and start the swim. It took me about an hour and eight minutes to complete the swim, but I was happy to say that I had finally swum across lake Geneva. It was a childhood dream of mine that had finally become a reality.

Summer is what gave me this opportunity. Because of summer and warm weather, the ice melted and the lake was swimmable once again. It gave me the chance to fulfill a dream I have always wanted to accomplish and let me tell you it felt amazing. So to all the seasons that we get to enjoy living in this bi-polar of a state I am happy that summer is one of them.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
