Dear Summer,
You are almost upon us once again. I can feel you subtly but surely creeping back, teasing us with sunny afternoons. The weather is getting hotter, making jumping into a body of water seem almost irresistible. But, you have not yet arrived. The morning is still characterized by a bitter chill and late nights can be uncomfortably cold. I can't wait for you to be in full bloom, so that we may wonder in awe at all your beauty.
Some people prefer colder seasons, like winter. Some don't appreciate the extremes of summer and opt for a more lukewarm season such as spring or the chilly season of fall, or what I like to call, almost-Winter. But me? I prefer the consistency of summer heat. The never having to worry about grabbing a coat, or a blanket for travel. I love not having to check Weatherbug because every day has the same forecast: clear and sunny from dusk 'til dawn. I enjoy knowing that a wardrobe complete with T-shirts, shorts, and Chacos are weather-permitting for any day of summer.
Your weather allows me to go to my favorite place, the beach -- the place where I can wear minimal clothing, get a sun-kissed glow, and make memories along the shoreline. The place where I can tan all my cares away while listening to soft rock and drinking a sweet iced tea on soft white sands.
Thank you, summer, for being the most dependable thing in my life. In the middle of a bitter winter, I always seem to forget the feeling of the sun rays radiating down on my skin. But every year, around the same time, you return as warm and glorious as ever. Thank you for being a furlough from the prison of the cycle of stress, midterms, and boring routine.
In summer, there is nothing holding us back. We are freed from our young adult responsibilities, unchained from the burdens of the less appreciated seasons. There is no chilly barrier in the way of going to the park, going jogging, taking a walk just for fun, and nights aren't too cold to spend looking up at the stars. We can E.N.O. in the woods or do any activity in the warm, yet mysterious embrace of the outdoors. Summer is a time of our lives when we are not restrained by class times, pants, makeup, or the inside of a building. We can live carefree lives, if only for a brief time. We have the freedom to take trips to the lake or down a river, go on cruises -- or cheaper activities, like engaging in summer romances. There is nothing holding us back from going on whirlwind adventures, except maybe summer jobs.
So, this is me, patiently waiting for your timely arrival.
Love,
Your greatest admirer.
