Is it me or does anything foreign always sound more interesting and better than something American? From food to people, to you guessed it -- TV shows! I've always had a love for anime. I grew up watching TV shows like "Sailor Moon," "Yugioh" and "One Piece" and movies like, "Castle in the Sky," that turned into more than just an addiction. It didn't help that my brother loved them even more, and constantly put me on to different shows like "Naruto," "Bleach" and "Death Note." His love expanded more than mine, but I've always had a soft spot for them even as I grew older.
No one told me that my new adult obsession would be Korean dramas. I've heard about them from friends in high school, but never really paid them any attention due to other TV shows at the time being more important, like "Degrassi," "Friends," "Castle" and anything "CSI," to name a few.
My current roommate, Stacy, is the one who put me on last year and I've been attached ever since. Korean dramas are very different from American ones, in ways other than the culture and language depicted their thought process and actions vary as well. Korean dramas are way less sex-orientated and innocence is more of a norm. American dramas are filled with sexual undertones of some sort varying from PG-13 to extra explicit.
Another thing that makes Korean dramas so different is how they can sum up a show in 20 episodes or less with a great ending versus watching what feels like 50 seasons of still figuring out who "A" is and why she ain't dead yet! (Shots fired at "Pretty Little Liars.") Not to mention, you actually get a full hour of TV time vs. America's 40 to 45 mins b.s. Granted some may say that Korean dramas are a little corny and I agree to an extent, but I think they are in a good way.
My first Korean drama, and still one of my favorites is the show "She Was Pretty" starring main Korean actors Park Seo Joon, Hwang Jung Eum and Choi Si Won. I fell in love with all the characters and it's crazy, romantic, comedic plot about a young woman who's financially unstable and thinks she's an ugly duckling compared to how she use to look in high school. Then her first love reaches out to her and that's where things get hectic. I refuse to say any more about it other than that it has really good catchy music, called OSTs, and strong messages that everyone could relate to about how you're way more than just your looks. Even though the men in this show are extremely hot!
Some other dramas that I strongly recommend are "Oh My Lady," "Secret Garden" and "Empress Ki" to name a few. Some can be found on websites like dramafever.com that allow you to watch for free!
My new found love for this genre of drama is borderline crazy, but you'll understand why once you give these shows a try. Trust me!
